FAMU Rattlers make most of storms

A thunderstorm forced Florida A&M head football coach Rubin Carter to scratch Saturday's afternoon practice.

However, the day was not a total wash, according to Carter.

"We went and made this a mental session this afternoon," Carter said. "It gave us an opportunity to review video tape from this morning's practice. We had a really good practice this morning."

Carter commended the defense after the morning practice Saturday for making plays and clamping down on the receivers.

"I liked the way we moved around, especially on the seven-on-seven, which is an offensive drill," Carter said. "We're starting to find some ball hawks for us with our defensive backs and linebackers.

"They are playing so much better. The communication is outstanding. They are making plays on the ball. I see a lot of improvement in that area."

Carter said he credited his defensive coaches for doing a better job of defining what they want the players to do in the defensive scheme.

"We're harping on the fundamentals, like coming out of your breaks properly," said junior free safety Jason Beach. "Always keep accelerating and never take any plays off.

"You may get one chance to make a play the whole game and you have to be ready. You can't miss it. You have to treat every play like it's the one you have to have."

In addition to reviewing film and going over plays, the team also got a weightlifting session in with strength coach Jeffery Woods.

"It's a possibility we could make this practice up," Carter said. "We'll see as we move forward with our schedule.

"Weather conditions can always change, but the main thing is that this wasn't a wasted day for us."

First game: FAMU vs. Southern, 3 p.m. Sept. 1, Birmingham, Ala., on WHBX (96.1 FM).
