One of two football players who were recently denied admission to the University of South Carolina has apparently found a new home at Bethune-Cookman.

Safety Arkee Smith, who signed with South Carolina but was not admitted to the school, will likely enroll at B-CU, his high school coach confirmed Wednesday.

"He told me he is 95 percent sure that he will commit to Bethune-Cookman," Jacksonville First Coast coach Marty Lee said. "He is supposed to go down there tomorrow to get all the paperwork done."

The 6-foot-1, 190-pound Smith could play strong safety for the Wildcats this season, according to a source at B-CU. Travis Roland, last year's starter at that position, is recovering from shoulder surgery and plans to redshirt this season.

Earlier this week, South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier blasted his school's admissions department for turning down Smith and receiver Michael Bowman just before the two freshmen were to report for fall practice.

"I've got to apologize to two young men that we recruited," Spurrier said. "They qualified. They signed with us in February. They were denied admission to our school. Personally, I don't think that's the way you do business."

Spurrier even threatened to go elsewhere if the school denies other players who qualify.

Smith would be the second player in two years with South Carolina ties to join the Wildcats. Mainland grad Brent Davis transferred to B-CU from USC a year ago.

OF NOTE: Senior wide receiver

Victor Johnson was taken to the Halifax Medical Center emergency room Tuesday night after suffering from heat cramps during the first day of practice, B-CU coach Alvin Wyatt said. Johnson is expected to be out 2-3 days, Wyatt said.
