Jackson State Notebook: Frosh makes giant impact

Head Coach Rick Comegy, JSU

The best performances in Jackson State's first scrimmage on Saturday night came from the team's biggest and smallest players.

First, the big boy. On his first play of the scrimmage, freshman right tackle Terrael Williams (6-foot-8, 390 pounds) nearly cleared out the entire side of the field as the offense picked up a 30-yard rushing gain.

"For such a big guy he can really move," JSU coach Rick Comegy said. "We'll have to get him in the playbook and bring him along slowly. But we finally might have found a tackle that we can run behind."

Williams, from Dallas, was about a week late for camp, clearing up eligibility concerns. Now that he's arrived, he's trying to live up to the hype surrounding his immense size.

"I've got a lot of work to do, but it felt good to finally get on the field," Williams said. "My goal isn't touchdowns, it's first downs, and I think I can help this team move the chains."

On the small side, running back L.D. Briscoe (5-9, 175) was the star of the offense, running for several big gains.

Briscoe, who also ran track last year, nearly left school in the spring because of coaching changes in the track program.

But after a week of thinking about his options, Briscoe decided to stay at Jackson State and focus on football.

"Football's really my first love, so I wanted to give it one really good shot," Briscoe said. "I'm glad the coaches accepted me back and I'm doing my best to help the team."

On Saturday, JSU's defense got the best of the offense for much of the night. The only touchdown was a 4-yard run by Lavarius Giles.

"The offense certainly has some things to clean up," Comegy said. "But unlike last year, we had a purpose and knew what we were trying to do. Execution comes with more snaps."

BRACK IN LIMBO

Quarterback William Brack hasn't practiced the last two days and Comegy said he's considering transferring.

Brack appeared in two games last year as Jimmy Oliver's backup, completing 1 of 11 passes for 9 yards. But he had fallen to third on the depth chart this season behind Oliver and Mississippi State transfer Tray Rutland.
