MVSU Delta Devils Go All Out in Final Scrimmage

Itta Bena, Miss. --- The Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils’ football team suited up for their final preseason scrimmage this morning. And, to the delight of attending fans it was an all out battle from opening kick-off to the final snap of the 72-play workout.

“The guys really got at it today and that’s what you like to see,” said head coach Willie Totten. “My hat goes off to the offensive line; we know they are the backbone of this team. They went at least 65 of the 72 plays without a break.”

Starting quarterback Paul Roberts set the tone for the day in two series of work in which he completed five of six passes for 113 yards. Roberts also connected with quarterback turned receiver Cameron Russ on a 35-yard scoring streak up the right sideline. Transfer tight end Abner Brown had an outstanding day with four receptions for 35 yards.

On the ground Johey Hargrett carried the ball nine times for 58 yards. Third unit quarterback Lorental Burrel completed five passes for 43 yards; he also had a 10 yards scoring run.

“Abner is going to be the one of the big surprises in the SWAC this year, with his height and skills he has the ability to control the center of the defense,” Totten said. Cameron did a great job in there. Because of our situation at quarterback we moved him to receiver; he is such a great athlete we wanted to find a way to put him on the field.”

Defensively, the Delta Devils continued to look strong up front with Ronald Green, Julius Love, Robert Austin and John Price as they forced two fumbles with four sacks.

Today’s scrimmage ended preseason camp for the Delta Devils as they turn their attention towards Arkansas-Pine Bluff for their September 1st season opener.

“We had some guys step up and really show that the team is coming together,” Totten added. It was a hard scrimmage.”
