Prairie View A&M football team breakdown

By RONNIE TURNER, For the Chronicle

Position-by-position analysis

Quarterbacks

Senior Chris Gibson has leadership qualities and athleticism. He likes to run, but needs to stay healthy in order for the Panthers to have a shot. Senior Mark Spivey, a pocket passer, will play if Gibson falters early on.

Running backs

The losses of Kerry Wilson and Arnell Fontenot, who is academically ineligible, will sting. Sophomore Calvin Harris rushed for 422 yards in limited action last season and will team with sophomore Donald Babers.

Wide receivers

Sophomore Anthony Weeden will be counted on to improve the unit's performance after moving from running back during the offseason. Sophomore Austin Nwokobia returns after a disappointing 2006 campaign (eight catches, 84 yards).

Tight ends

Ralph Revuelta and Marlon Allen will be used mostly as a blocking tight ends.

Offensive line

With three starters gone, there will be some new faces. Steve Jacson and Cleveland Collie return to provide mentoring for sophomores Adrian Logan and Thurman Brown and Maurice Robinson
Kicking

Freshmen Brady Faggard and Kyle Mathews will compete for the starting job.

Defensive line

Senior Jon Johnson had 35 tackles and 7 1/2 sacks last season and brings much-needed experience.

Linebackers

Senior Zach East is a fierce playmaker, who recorded 60 tackles and one interception last season. Kenneth Xenon and Gary Hicks may need some time before they can become major contributors.

Secondary

The Panthers have all four starters returning. Anthony Beck, Val Ford and Jason Fobbs combined for seven interceptions last season.

Punting

Freshmen Brady Faggard and Kyle Mathews are competing for the place-kicking duties, and the loser will probably end up as the starting punter.

Return game

This unit could use a spark, and the Panthers are hoping Anthony Weeden can supply it. Last season, Weeden returned 12 kicks for 249 yards (20.8 yards per kick). Junior Jason Fobbs, who returned a few kicks and punts last season, will also factor into the mix for the Panthers.
