Southern University women soccer team reports

The Southern women’s soccer team reported Tuesday to begin training for the 2007 fall season.

Coach John Knighten will welcome his third class at the helm of the SU soccer program, including 10 returnees and eight newcomers.

“We have a very solid group coming in,” Knighten said. “We are going to focus on working together as one on the field and off.

“Once we jell the young ladies together, we will have no trouble getting the job done on the field.”

Some of the players returning for their senior season include Britnee Matthews, Olhyvhia Essien and Miriam Akinfosile. Also returning is second-team All SWAC and All-SWAC academic team member Almarie Soto-Ortiz, who was second on the team in goals with six.

The Lady Jaguars will start at 9 a.m. today with a team meeting with the athletic staff then go into their training.
