TSU coaches switch practice schedule in effort to avoid worst of heat

By MIKE ORGAN, Staff Writer, The Tennessean

Beating the heat will become even more difficult Saturday for Tennessee State's football team, when the Tigers begin two-a-day practices.

So far TSU has managed to avoid the hottest part of the day by moving practices, normally scheduled to start at 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

"They're keeping us out of the worst heat, but it's still pretty hot out here," running back Javarris Williams said.

On Saturday the Tigers will attempt to miss the heat by starting their first practice at 9:35 a.m. and wrapping up by 11:35 a.m. They will return to the field from 6-9 p.m.

"Whatever we do, we're not hitting that 1, 2, 3 4 and 5 o'clock part of the day," Coach James Webster said.

First scrimmage: TSU's first scrimmage will be Aug. 18.

Webster said he still is not sure who will fill several of the starting positions vacated by players who graduated. This is particularly the case on the defensive line, where three new starters must be found.

"I am really liking the offensive line, I'm really liking the team as a whole, but I'm still not sure who will step in on the defensive line yet," Webster said.

Divens' status: An X-ray on defensive tackle Lamar Divens' knee revealed no damage, and the Vanderbilt transfer could begin practicing Friday.

"I feel good, and I don't think my knee is anything too serious," said Divens, who hurt his knee while walking off the field in an individual workout last week before preseason camp began.

An MRI will be performed on Divens' knee today to make sure there is no damage.

Safety update: There is a three-way competition for one of the starting safety positions.

With Nikkieda Rutland graduated, Larry Williford, Anthony Levine and former Pearl-Cohn star Reno Thompson have a shot at the starting assignment.

"Williford started some games for us last year, and we've got Levine coming back," Webster said.

"And Reno Thompson has done well. He's playing a lot better this year than he did last year."
