UMES Volleyball looking forward to 2007 season

UMES Volleybal Coach Dan Metil

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) added another highly talented player to its growing stable as Head Women's Volleyball Coach Don Metil announced the signing of Shaylin Sommer (Atascadero, Calif./Atascadero H.S.). Metil also announced the very competitive schedule for the 2007 campaign.

Sommer, a 6-2 middle blocker will add instant depth to a young team that was third in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) last season and posted a 19-15 overall record under former Head Coach Alex Temkin.

"Shaylin will bring some height and west coast experience to the middle position. She has played a lot of positions in club and high school, and because of that she gives us some options on the court. She will be a great fit for us."

Sommer has already racked up the awards at the high school level, earning her schools' Most Inspirational Female Athlete of the Year award while being named All San Luis Obispo County first team, All PAC 7 League first team, and the team's Most Valuable Player, all in 2006. The previous season Sommer was All PAC 5 League 2nd Team and took the Coaches Award and Most Improved Player Award for her team.

She is used to playing a high level as her team made the California Interscholastic Federation playoffs in 2006 and went to the quarterfinals the year before. Last season against San Luis Obispo Sommer tallied 17 kills, six blocks, three digs and a pair of aces.

Trent Lunceford, her high school coach, was thrilled with Sommer's decision. "I'm happy that Shaylin has an opportunity to play at the college level. She has definitely improved the last three years and she's worked really hard."

Sommer joins new incoming Hawks Christina Estebane' (El Paso, Texas) and Whitney Johnson (Prince Frederick, Md.).

Metil also released the 2007 schedule for the Hawks. UMES opens at home against Metil's former team Coppin State University on August 24th and then hits the road, not retuning to the William P. Hytche Athletic Center until September 25th, again against Coppin State in a MEAC match-up.

In between dates with the Eagles, UMES will play in tournaments at Manhattan College Lafayette College (Pa.), and Sacred Heart University where they will play the likes of Seton Hall, Arkansas-Little Rock, Farleigh Dickinson, George Washington, Providence and St. Peter's. They also travel to Bucknell for a non-conference match on September 19th.

The Hawks open MEAC play on September 14th at Morgan State and follow with a date two days later at Hampton.

The Hawks host their own tournament at the end of September when they play Delaware State, St. Francis (Pa.), Robert Morris and Norfolk State. The Comfort Inn Classic runs from Friday September 28th through the 29th.

UMES plays Howard, Morgan State and Hampton all at home later in the season and travels to Delaware State, Coppin State and Howard for their remaining MEAC matches. They host North Carolina Central, a school reclassifying to Division I status for senior night on November 11th.

The MEAC Championships are again held at Hampton University November 16th-18th.

"It should be a good schedule for us," said Metil. "We have some tough opponents and plenty of conference competition that will help us prepare for the championships."
