UMES volleyball picked to finish third; FAMU first

The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference announced its preseason coaches poll for the 2007 volleyball season today and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, under first-year coach Don Metil, is picked to finish third in the 11-team conference.

UMES received 334 points in the poll, and is predicted to finish behind Florida A&M and Morgan State. The Rattlers, who have won the last six straight MEAC titles, were picked to win the conference, receiving 460 points and 21 of the 22 first-place votes. Morgan State ended up with 408 points, getting the other first-place vote.

Delaware State was tabbed as the fourth-place team, North Carolina A&T fifth, Howard sixth, Bethune-Cookman seventh, South Carolina State eighth, Coppin State ninth, Hampton 10th and Norfolk State 11th. The top eight teams in the regular season will advance to the conference tournament at Hampton on November 16 and 17.

After finishing in fourth place in the regular season, the Hawks were knocked out of the 2006 MEAC tournament in three games by top-ranked Florida A&M in the semifinals.

The Hawks will begin their 2007 season on August 24 when they host Coppin State.
