Tennessee State Coach James Webster is not big on coachspeak. You know, all that mindless jibber-jabber about, “We’re gonna take ‘em one game at a time, We’re awfully young, We could be better but our record may not show it.'’

Fans should appreciate his candid style. It’s refreshing.

When asked this week if he believed his team could compete for the OVC title this season Webster said ”Yes.”

When asked who would replace talented wide receiver Mike Mason, Webster admitted, “We can’t replace his talent.”

Webster doesn’t sugar coat or make excuses for losses.

And if one player performs especially well in a win he doesn’t hesitate to give that player praise. Other coaches worry that putting a player in the spotlight ruins them. Explodes their egos.

Webster’s openess and honesty helps fans to keep tabs on a program that struggles for attention from the media, which spends so much time covering the Titans, Vols and Commodores.
