EMU Football Opens 2011 Campaign Versus Howard Bison

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University football team embarks on its 120th season Saturday, Sept. 3, at Rynearson Stadium versus Football Championship Subdivision foe Howard University. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:06 p.m.

The Eagles and the Bison are meeting for the second time on the gridiron, with the Green and White holding down a 1-0 advantage in the all-time series. The last time the teams hooked up was Sept. 22, 2007, when EMU notched a convincing 38-15 victory at Rynearson Stadium.

TWO FCS OPPONENTS AWAIT: The 2011 schedule features a pair of home games against Football Championship Subdivision opponents in Howard University, Sept. 3, and Alabama State University, Sept. 10. It marks the first time since 2008 that EMU will have played a FCS school.

With the two-year absence from the schedule, the Eagles are one of only four teams – EMU, Bowling Green, Miami and Toledo – in the Mid-American Conference not to have played a Football Championship Subdivision team in either the 2009 or 2010 campaign.

OPENING UP: EMU is 53-58-8 (47.9%) all-time on opening day. This will be the fourth straight season, and the sixth occasion in the last 10 years, that the Eagles will open at home in Rynearson Stadium, where last year they debuted with a 31-27 setback to Army to start the 2010 campaign.

WINNING STREAK: The Eagles have posted a 6-3 record against Football Championship Subdivision opponents since the 2001 campaign. However, EMU is currently riding a two-game winning streak that includes a 38-15 decision over Howard, Sept. 22, 2007, and a 52-0 victory over Indiana State, Aug. 28, 2008.

During the nine-game span, the Green and White have averaged 30.1 points and 406.1 total yards of offense per game, while giving up an average of 23.4 points and 366.8 yards per contest.
