Gold Nuggets win at Fisk, regain share of lead in GCAC

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Paige Gauthier scored 13 points Monday to lead NAIA No. 11 Xavier University of Louisiana in a 68-45 Gulf Coast Athletic Conference women's basketball victory against Fisk.

The victory was the ninth in a row for the Gold Nuggets (21-4 overall, 9-2 GCAC), who moved into a first-place tie in the conference with SUNO and Talladega after Talladega won 72-68 at home against SUNO. Xavier will visit SUNO on Saturday.

Gauthier was Xavier's only double-figure scorer, but 14 Gold Nuggets scored. Andraquay Quinnine scored nine points, eight in the first half, and freshman Whitney Gathright had eight.

Simone Charles scored 12 points for Fisk (6-17, 2-9), and Nacori Foreman and Janine Davis scored 11 each. Rasheda Ademosu had seven steals, the most by an XU opponent this season.

Xavier led 34-19 at halftime.

The Gold Nuggets outshot the Lady Bulldogs 43.1 to 24.4 percent from the floor and outrebounded them 54-25. It was the third consecutive game and the ninth time this season that Xavier limited an opponent to less than 30 percent. The rebound margin was Xavier's second largest this season. Carmen Holcombe led the Gold Nuggets with eight rebounds, and Danielle Tucker grabbed five.

Xavier matched a season high by making seven 3-pointers, two apiece by Gauthier, Quinnine and Gathright.

Gauthier had four points and six turnovers in the first half but produced nine points and no turnovers in the second half. She reached double figures in points for the seventh time this season and the third time in the past five games.

The Nuggets' streak is their longest since winning nine in a row last season.

Xavier will travel to SUNO on Saturday for a 5 p.m. game at The Castle. SUNO women's coach and athletics director Elston King confirmed Monday that starting time, along with a 7 p.m. matchup between Xavier's and SUNO's men. Xavier schedules have listed the starting times as 2 and 4 p.m.
