'Whirlwind' experience lands Garvin as new SCSU basketball coach

ORANGEBURG, South Carolina  --  Murray Garvin described the previous 24 hours as a “whirlwind” experience.

On Wednesday, he spent the morning hours working with South Carolina State men’s basketball coach Tim Carter in preparation for Saturday’s matchup against Savannah State.

By the afternoon, Garvin went from associate assistant to the top man in charge following Carter’s resignation.

“Real off-guard,” said Garvin about the coaching change. “We were in preparation for Savannah State. Coach Carter was engaged...I didn’t see it coming.”

The surprises continued Thursday when he signed a contract from S.C. State Athletics Director Charlene Johnson keeping him as head coach through the 2013-14 season. The S.C. State sports information office confirmed the agreement with Johnson, who was unavailable for comment, but gave no details.
