TALLAHASSEE, Florida -- When baby boomers speak of the good old days they often reminisce about it and hope aloud that we would return to those days. School was different then, more like a family. Few of us really want to relive the past, but there are some things about it that are worth recapturing.

Before college football became so specialized and consumptive, coaches were required to teach. It is no coincidence then that legendary coaches like Eddie Robinson, John Merritt, and Alonso Jake Gaither all had Master’s Degrees. Eddie Robinson received a bachelor’s degree from Leland College in Louisiana and a Master’s Degree from the University of Iowa in 1954. “Big John” Merritt received his bachelor’s degree from Kentucky State University and a Master’s Degree from the University of Kentucky in 1952.
