WSSU defense finally gaining some recognition

WINSTON-SALEM, North Carolina  -- Winston-Salem State’s defense is ranked No. 1 overall in Division II, but the news brings just a shrug and slight smile from senior linebacker Daniel Mungin.

"Somebody told me that this morning and that’s a great accomplishment and a goal we had four ourselves, but we still have a ways to go,” Mungin said. “It doesn’t hold too much weight right now because we haven’t won anything yet.”

Defensive coordinator Kienus Boulware and Coach Connell Maynor, upon hearing what Mungin said, nodded their heads.

"That shows you that Mungin has been listening to what we preach around here,” Maynor said. “Stats don’t matter, rankings don’t matter, and individual weekly awards don’t matter. It’s all about the W.”

The Rams lead all Division II teams in total defense with just 221.7 yards a game allowed, and the No. 1 ranking in the category is a first in Maynor’s four seasons. Making the accomplishment more ...
