Gold Nuggets' rally falls short in loss at Mobile


MOBILE, Ala. -- Xavier University of Louisiana suffered its first women's basketball loss of the season, 64-59 at Mobile on Monday.

Whitney Gathright scored 13 points for the Gold Nuggets (2-1), ranked 15th in NAIA Division I, and Paige Gauthier and Danielle Tucker scored 11 apiece. Carmen Holcombe led Xavier with seven rebounds.

Alicia Curry and Deonica McCormick scored 10 points apiece for Mobile (1-0), which led 20-13 at halftime and took its biggest lead, 52-36, on Taron Bright's basket with 6:08 remaining. Xavier outscored Mobile 23-12 in the final six minutes but did not get closer than five points during the rally.

Xavier led 10-6 through the first eight minutes. Curry's basket at 8:42 of the first half but the Lady Rams ahead to stay at 13-12.

Mobile outshot the Gold Nuggets 44.9 to 26.8 percent from the floor and outrebounded them 49-41. Xavier committed a season-low 11 turnovers and gained 27.

Xavier's next game will start at 5:30 p.m. Friday against NAIA No. 17 Our Lady of the Lake in the LSUS Classic at Shreveport, La. The Nuggets' next home game will start at noon on Nov. 23 against Texas College during homecoming weekend.
