Southern Monday morning rewind

BATON ROUGE, Louisiana  -- Southern plays its final home game of the season when it meets Clark Atlanta in a non-conference game at 6 p.m. Saturday in A.W. Mumford Stadium. Clark is coming off a 35-28 victory against Edward Waters (Fla.) on Saturday.

LOOKING BACK
Southern overcame a 21-7 second-quarter deficit to defeat Alabama State 31-28 on Saturday in Montgomery, Ala. Dray Joseph threw four touchdown passes, three of which went to Mike Jones in his first multiple-touchdown-reception game. The Jaguars defense allowed just seven points in the last 2½ quarters. Jaleel Richardson had a 64-yard kickoff return after the Hornets had tied the score at 28 with a little more than a minute to play. That led to Gregory Pittman’s career-long 43-yard field goal, which was a game-winner with 18 seconds remaining. Southern overcame a season-worst 16 penalties, thanks in part to ASU committing 15 penalties.

SATURDAY'S STAR
Jones assumed the role of primary receiver in place of Lee Doss, who was serving a one-game suspension for an unspecified violation of team rules. Jones’ three touchdowns came on passing plays that covered 68, 74 and 13 yards as he consistently beat the Hornets press coverage and got behind cornerbacks for big-gainers. He finished with five catches for 211 yards.
