Southern polishes running game in 53-0 win over Clark Atlanta

BATON ROUGE, Louisiana  -- Southern took advantage of playing overmatched Clark Atlanta by working on its running game Saturday in a 53-0 victory at A.W. Mumford Stadium.

As the Jaguars inch closer to the Southwesetern Athletic Conference Championship Game on Dec. 7 and a rematch against Jackson State — a 19-14 loss in which SU rushed for a mere 102 yards — improving the running game is a focus.

Southern came out with a dedicated effort to establish its rushing attack, tallying 19 rushing attempts in its 31 plays in the first half, netting 124 yards.

The Jaguars finished with 318 rushing yards — the most in a game since 2009, when they totaled 349 yards against Central State.

Freshman running back Lenard Tillery carried the load, totaling 86 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries, in the game’s first 30-minutes.

Tillery had a 7-yard touchdown run in the first quarter and added a 17-yard one with 10:51 before halftime as he scampered through and around defenders.
