TU Golden Tigers sign 21 on National Signing Day

TUSKEGEE, Alabama  -- The Tuskegee University Department of Athletics has announced the signing of 21 student-athletes today who have intentions of playing football under Coach Willie Slater this Fall.  The student-athletes were signed from five different states, with Georgia and Alabama each having seven kids apiece sign with the school, leading all states.

"Today was a great day," Slater said.  "We addressed some needs, but we still have some holdouts that we would like to have sign with us.  We hope to accomplish more work, but I like what we have been able to accomplish."

Social media had a major impact on the signing of the student-athletes, as participants from Mill Creek High School in Georgia and Miami Central High School in Florida were captured on camera making their declaration.

Three different college transfer players signed from three different states.  These players include natives of California, Maryland and an additional signee from Fairmount State University in West Virginia.  Slater was also impressed with the variety of high school kids that were able to sign with the team.

"There are college transfers that we signed from different parts of the country," Slater said.  "We also managed to get some high school kids from Miami, too.  I am pleased with how [Recruiting Coordinator] Coach (Kelvin) Powell has worked to find the kids that are the best fit for our program."

The Golden Tigers will begin their 2014 season Sept. 6, as Tuskegee will host Alabama A&M on campus for the first time since 1998.
