Echebelem's big numbers earn her GCAC player award

NEW ORLEANS — Big numbers for Xavier University of Louisiana's Chinedu Echebelem helped her earn Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Week in women's volleyball for Sept. 8-14.

In the Gold Nuggets' only match of the week, Echebelem had a season-high 19 kills, a career-high 28 digs and two aces in the Gold Nuggets' 29-27, 25-22, 23-25, 25-17 home victory against Wiley. The combined total of kills and digs is the largest by a Xavier player in a match since the program was reinstated in 2010.

Echebelem is a 5-foot-6 senior outside hitter from Dallas and a graduate of Duncanville High School. This is the third time she has been GCAC Player of the Week; she won once in 2013 and once in 2012.

Xavier, 4-2 overall and 2-0 in the GCAC, will play conference opponent Philander Smith at noon Saturday at XU's Convocation Center. Admission is free. Xavier has a four-match win streak.
