UMES lets SCSU hang around, loses in OT

PRINCESS ANNE, Maryland -- The UMES men’s basketball team struggled all night to find consistency on the offensive end, and let South Carolina State hang around.

“We kept getting the lead and they kept making big shots,” UMES coach Bobby Collins said. “I told out guys we gotta be able to sit down and defend and get stops when we need it and be grimy and we didn’t do that tonight.”

The Hawks paid a penance for letting the Bulldogs stay close.

When Devin Martin missed a free throw with nine seconds left in overtime the score was left tied. And when Michael Myers missed a free throw with 40 seconds left that could have given the Hawks a 3-point lead in overtime — it left the door open again.

After a timeout by South Carolina State, the Hawks played 27 seconds of good defense before allowing Edward Stephens to put up a desperation jumper with the shot clock running down.
