Missed chances hurt JSU in loss

JACKSON, Mississippi -- A lead hasn’t been the easiest thing for Jackson State to obtain this season. Prior to the game against Grambling, the Tigers didn't hold a lead in three of their four games.

In the first quarter of a 59-27 loss to Grambling on Saturday, JSU had a chance at a touchdown to open the scoring.

The Tigers (1-4, 1-2 SWAC) faced a fourth-and-1 at the Grambling 15-yard line. JSU coach Harold Jackson elected to send his field-goal unit onto the field instead of gambling on fourth down.

“I knew it was one yard short or something, but I figured to go with the field goal, so we can get three points on the board,” Jackson said. “(So) we could get something going, get the momentum going.”

Kicker Ryan Deising missed the 37-yard field-goal attempt, though, so JSU came up empty.
