Virginia State Trojan Football Overpowers SAU Falcons, 24-0

ETTRICK, Virginia -- The Virginia State University Trojan Football team overpowered the Saint Augustine's University Falcons, 24 - 0, on Oct. 3 after holding the Falcons to only 82 yards offensively.

The victory gives the Trojans a 3-2 overall record, 1-1 in the CIAA conference.

"The guys went out and played in the adverse elements, it was really tough this week preparing due to the weather," said Head Coach Byron Thweatt. "Last week we were handicapped with eleven starters out, this week I got three back so hopefully we continue to get healthy and play Trojan football."

After sitting out last week out with an injury, junior quarterback Tarian Ayres (Dillwyn, VA) returned for the Trojans and completed 11-of-22 passes for 55 yards.

Midway into the first quarter junior linebacker Geo Feggins (South Hill, VA) forced the Falcons to fumble allowing sophomore Malik Sexton (Portsmouth, VA) a chance to recover the ball at the Falcons 25 yard line. The play advanced the Trojans to the 21 yard line where the Trojans began their third drive of the contest.

Sophomore running back Trenton Cannon (Hampton, VA) put the Trojans on the board in the first quarter after breaking through the Falcon defense for a 20 yard touchdown.

Before the conclusion of the 1st quarter, the Trojans revisited the end zone off of a 23 yd rush by Ayres. The Trojans took their 14-0 lead into halftime after a scoreless second quarter for both teams.

Late in the third quarter the Trojans marched the ball from their own 27 yard line to the Falcons 6 yd line. After a lengthy drive the Trojans held off the Falcon defense and sophomore kicker Mathew Hillquist (Glen Allen, VA) attempted and secured a field goal that extended the Trojan lead to 17-0.

In the fourth quarter on 2nd down and 19, Cannon rushed for 29 yards for his second touchdown of the contest to seal the deal for the Trojans 24-0 victory.

"When everybody comes out, does their job and executes their tasks we will come out with the win every time. Personally, it felt good coming out, dominating the run game and assisting my team to this victory," said Cannon.

Cannon lead the Trojans offensively with 159 yards on 24 carries and two touchdowns. Junior running back Kavon Bellamy (Hampton, VA) contributed 54 yards on 7 carries and Ayres added 53 yards rushing and single touchdown.

Sophomore linebacker Brandon Lynch (Norfolk, VA) dominated the game defensively for the Trojans with 13 tackles total (11 solo) whiile sophomore defensive lineman Erin Pettiford (Cedar Grove, NC) added 5 solo tackles and two sacks.

"I tell the defense we have to stay on them from the first quarter until the fourth quarter, and they did that," expessed Thweatt.

Defensively Goodman and Cosby lead the Falcon defense with 6 tackles each.

The Trojans will travel to Elizabeth City, NC on Saturday, Oct. 10 to take on Elizabeth City State University at 1 p.m.
