WSSU tweaks football schedule by adding Bowie State

WINSTON-SALEM, North Carolina -- Winston-Salem State has tweaked its football schedule and it will now include Bowie State, the CIAA Northern Division champion the last two seasons.

The Rams were scheduled to play Catawba at Bowman Gray Stadium on Sept. 9, but Catawba is scheduled to play at VMI, a Football Championship Subdivision school. WSSU released its football schedule two weeks ago and had a game against Catawba during the second week of the season.

Tonia Walker, the athletics director at WSSU, said it was an oversight on her part when the contract was signed in 2015.

“We signed for a home and home, but it was actually for 2016 and then for 2018,” Walker said.

Walker said finding another opponent wasn’t easy but getting Bowie State at such a late date will make for an exciting home game.

The game won’t count in the CIAA standings just like the Virginia Union game, which will be played the following week in Richmond, Va., and is a nonconference game.
