Xavier Rush deliver in overtime for first road win of season


JACKSONVILLE, Florida — Xavier University of Louisiana scored on its final six overtime possessions, including Innocent Kukulu's tiebreaking 3-pointer with 47 seconds remaining, to rally for a 65-61 Gulf Coast Athletic Conference men's basketball victory Saturday against Edward Waters.

The Gold Rush (8-14, 4-3) snapped a three-game losing streak and won on the road for the first time this season. XULA is 2-0 this season in overtime games, both in conference.

Kukulu's trey gave XULA a 62-59 lead. The Tigers (10-13, 3-4) then missed a 3-pointer, which the Gold Rush rebounded. Seth Jackson scored with 24 seconds remaining to extend XULA's advantage to 64-59.

Jackson and Jalen David scored 18 points apiece for the Gold Rush. Kukulu scored 11, and Chris Ward had 10. David grabbed nine rebounds, Ward had eight, and Donovan Armstrong had six assists.
J osiah Crawford scored 13 points and Prince Braynen 12 for Edward Waters.

XULA trailed 18-4 in the ninth minute before tying the score at 21. The Tigers led 35-32 at halftime. Jackson's two free throws at 4:33 of the second half gave XULA its only lead in regulation, 51-50. Both teams went 0-of-2 from the floor after Jackson scored the final points of regulation, two free throws that tied the score at 53.

XULA allowed 18 second-half points, its fewest on the road in four years. For the game the Gold Rush outshot the Tigers 36.8 to 29.8 percent from the floor.

XULA will play host to Philander Smith at 7:30 p.m. Monday in a GCAC game at the Convocation Center.
