Texas Southern beats Arkansas-Pine Bluff 71-68

The target on Texas Southern’s back grows larger as the Southwestern Athletic Conference schedule nears its end. Arkansas-Pine Bluff gave TSU its best shot Saturday, but the SWAC frontrunner was able to fend off the threat.

Arkansas-Pine Bluff’s Savalace Townsend missed a game-tying 3-pointer as time expired, and the Tigers held on for a 71-68 victory before a crowd of 1,103 at the H&PE Arena.

TSU (14-10, 12-1) won its sixth consecutive game and swept its regular-season series with the Golden Lions (6-20, 6-8). Lawrence Johnson-Danner led the Tigers with 15 points, and Travele Jones and Justin Ray each scored 14.

Auburn survives to beat Arkansas-Pine Bluff

AUBURN, AL -- Maybe some of the euphoria surrounding Auburn's SEC championship in football has rubbed off on the men's basketball team.

The Tigers survived a scare to beat winless Arkansas-Pine Bluff 76-72 Sunday in front of several hundred fans at a largely empty Auburn Arena. In a season that is likely to be full of indignities for Auburn (3-4), Sunday's game nearly became the most embarrassing.

The Golden Lions (0-7), a SWAC team that typically starts its season on an impossible non-conference barnstorming tour, had lost their first six games by an average margin of 26 points but led Auburn by seven late in the second half.

Auburn comes back to top winless Arkansas-Pine Bluff

AUBURN -- Auburn basketball coach Tony Barbee was still hoarse from cheering the Tigers' football team to victory a day earlier in Atlanta, so he shrugged off the sparse crowd Sunday afternoon at Auburn Arena. "It is what it is," he said. "Believe me, I'm caught up in the football hype, too."

The Tigers survived a scare to beat winless Arkansas-Pine Bluff 76-72 in front of a crowd listed at 4,561 fans -- and probably had about 4,000 fewer than that.

Payne's layup with 8 seconds left lifts Auburn past Arkansas-Pine Bluff, 76-72

AUBURN, Ala. — The play Auburn coach Tony Barbee called in the final seconds of a tie game broke down — and it worked out perfectly. Allen Payne hit a layup with 8 seconds left and Rob Chubb added two free throws to lead Auburn to a come-from-behind, 76-72 victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Sunday.

The Tigers (3-4) scored the final 11 points to rally from...

University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff basketball signs four‎

Golden Lions slams Winthrop University for first NCAA Tournament victory in school history.

The 2010 Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament Champions, UAPB Golden Lions and second year Coach George Ivory, HSRN's Division I National Coach of the Year, have signed four solid players to the Golden Lions Den. The Golden Lions ended last season at 18-16, dropping a second round NCAA Tournament game to eventual National Champion Duke Blue Devils. However, the Golden Lions brought pride to the SWAC with a 61-44 thrashing of Winthrop University for their first victory in their first appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The win broke a 17 game conference losing streak for the SWAC in the tournament.

The Golden Lions lost five seniors, including four starters from their championship team. UAPB last won the SWAC basketball championship 42 years ago. But, Ivory is capitalizing on the Golden Lions rags to riches story after losing the first 11 games of a brutal schedule that took the program from Oregon to Michigan, and Georgia to Ohio in "Money Games" that UAPB had little chance of winning.

Coach Ivory is quickly proving he is more than a strong defensive coach, but also a top judge of basketball talent and an excellent recruiter. On Wednesday, the first day of the Spring open signing period, Ivory and his staff received official commitments from Daniel Broughton (Watson Chapel), Keith Ross (Watson Chapel), Lavoris Weathers (Paris Junior College) and Shamus Ferguson (Mineral Area College). "We're elated to be able to bring in players of the caliber of these four young men that we signed today," said UAPB's Ivory. "Our coaching staff is really excited about next season and the level of talent we'll have the ability to put on the floor at all five positions."

UAPB signees Keith Ross (L) and Daniel Broughton (R) have been playing on the same teams since sixth grade.

Keith Ross, 6'4 205, Guard, Watson Chapel, Arkansas, High School: Watson Chapel High School...Ross brings depth to the Golden Lions basketball program with his pure athletic talent and versatility. While in high school he was a key contributor for a high school team which made three consecutive semi-final appearances in the state playoffs. Ross averaged 12 points per game and led his team in 3 pointers made...High School Honors/Awards: He had an impressive high school career where he provided the Wildcats with a scoring threat and strong defender. A 2009 and 2010 All-State Class 6A Selection, Ross should be able to contribute immediately for the Golden Lions next season. Both Ross and UAPB signee, Daniel Broughton compiled a 65-23 record over the last three seasons, including a 47-8 mark over the last two and won a pair of conference titles.

Daniel Broughton, 6'8 255, Forward, Watson Chapel, Arkansas, High School: Watson Chapel High School...Broughton brings a physical, tough inside presence to the Golden Lions front court rotation and should be able to make an immediate impact next season. He has good fundamental skills and great size for low post position at the collegiate level. Broughton averaged 16 points and 12 rebounds per game at Watson Chapel...High School Honors/Awards: As a prepster he was dominating force leading his high school team to three consecutive semi-final appearances in the state playoffs. Broughton is a 2009 and 2010 Class 6A All-State selection, and currently ranks as one the top high school basketball players in the State of Arkansas and in the South Region. He selected the UAPB program over Central Arkansas (Coached by former NBA and University of Arkansas star Corliss Williamson, who was named head coach at UCA last month), Arkansas State, Murry State, Southeast Missouri State and others...Keith Ross and Broughton have been playing together since sixth grade on local AAU teams, and their familiarity with each other helped to bring success to Watson Chapel Junior and Senior high schools.

Lavoris Weathers, 6' 7 240, Forward, Paris Junior College, Texas (Greenwood, MS, High School)l...Weathers is a strong, athletic talent who can overpower opponents with his size and agility. NCAA: University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff 44, Duke 73

University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff ends first NCAA Tournament experience with a 1-1 record, defeating Winthrop and falling to Duke 44-73.

Duke outmuscles UAPB

From the tip you could see that UAPB's lack of size would be an issue for the Golden Lions. They were outrebounded in this game 24-41, and that proved to be the difference in the game. Duke wins 73-44. In the first half, scoring points took a backseat to fouls as UAPB found themselves with several players in foul trouble before the midway point. The Duke Blue Devils looked untouchable as they shot 44 pct. from the field in the first half. Kyle Singler led the way with 13 points and 6 rebounds.

As for the Golden Lions, Terrance Calvin shot 66 pct. from the field and scored 7 of UAPB's 20 first half points. They were outrebounded in the first half 20-11 and committed 13 personal fouls. Duke led by 19 at halftime. In the second half it was much of the same for the Blue Devils. UAPB came out in a zone and shot the ball well but once again could not get to the freethrow line. Singler led Duke with 22 points and 10 rebounds. The Blue Devils shot 28 freethrows for the game to the Golden Lions 7. No one on the Golden Lions roster scored in double figures.

Those "Enormously Heartening" Golden Lions

A friend and wise man posted this Facebook status update after UAPB won the NCAA play-in game on Tuesday:

"There was something enormously heartening about watching the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions beat Winthrop tonight. It reminded me of why I used to love March Madness (TM) even back when UCLA was winning every year. A bunch of kids you never heard of who didn't get 20 D1 offers each playing their hearts out for a shot at Duke. Chances slim and none, but hey they can say they did it."

Hear, hear! As uninspiring as the Hogs were this past season, UAPB has been that inspiring and then some. Everyone loves a Cinderella story. Well, it doesn't get much more Cinderella than the Golden Lions. The never-ending road trip with which they began the season caught the attention of the New York Times' basketball blog and Sports Illustrated. And not only did the Golden Lions play their first 14 games on the road (with most of those opponents belonging to major conferences such as the ACC and Big 12), but they began the year 0-11. And yet, here they are. Pretty amazing.

Top-seeded Duke cruises into second round in Jacksonville ...

Arkansas-Pine Bluff had the success you would expect from a No. 16 seed in the first round of the NCAA Tournament — none. Duke, the top seed in the South region, built an early double-digit lead and coasted to a 73-44 victory over the overmatched Golden Lions on Friday night at Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena. No top seed has ever lost to a 16. “That didn’t cross our minds, the whole 1 vs. 16 thing,” said Duke senior guard Jon Scheyer, who scored 13 points. “We wanted to get a win and start it off right.”

Junior forward Kyle Singler led the Blue Devils with 22 points and 10 rebounds. Duke shot 51 percent from the floor and held Arkansas-Pine Bluff to 32percent. “Defensively, we were excellent,” said Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski, who earned his 72nd NCAA Tournament victory, extending his NCAA record. “We’re more talented than they are, but I was happy with how my team played, and I’m happy that we’re moving on.” Duke (30-5) will advance to Sunday’s second round against eighth-seeded Cal or ninth-seeded Louisville. The tip-off time will be announced today.

UAPB Golden Lions Moving on Without Townsend

A second opinion from a Pine Bluff doctor provided the best of both worlds for Arkansas-Pine Bluff guard Savalace Townsend. The sophomore broke his right hand in a Feb. 8 game against Alabama State and an initial prognosis recommended season-ending surgery. He spent the next week pondering his next move — play with a broken bone in his shooting hand or check out of a season that still could end in a Southwestern Athletic Conference championship for UAPB.

UAPB 6-1/160 guard Savalace Townsend (#23) had successful hand surgery yesterday and is expected to return to play before the SWAC Tournament. The former Long Beach, Mississippi (Long Beach High School) star is averaging 10.6 points, 3.7 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game.

“I don’t know what I’m going to do,” he said Thursday. A day later, his decision was made a bit easier. Townsend had surgery on his hand in Pine Bluff Friday, but coach George Ivory said the recovery time is not expected to take up the rest of the season. The coach said he won’t be available for either game this weekend — UAPB (10-14, 10-3) hosts Prairie View A&M (13-10, 8-4) at 7:30 tonight — but the Golden Lions’ second-leading scorer is expected to return for the regular-season finale against Mississippi Valley State March 4. Hearing that news Friday, Ivory said, made the decision to have surgery easier for Townsend.

“I think when he realized he could play and come back and help the team, that was good for him,” Ivory said. “He had surgery and came back (during practice) and he’s doing well.” A day earlier, Townsend said he was struggling with the decision. At that time, though, he had only seen one doctor, and had been told surgery was required and that the procedure would make it so he missed the final five games, the SWAC Tournament and whatever games UAPB played after that. “I wasn’t having any of that,” Townsend said.

UAPB WIN SNAPS ‘CURSE’ OF HORNETS

During a Sunday practice in preparation for Monday’s game against Alabama State, Arkansas-Pine Bluff men’s basketball coach George Ivory reminded his team they hadn’t beaten the Hornets since he became coach prior to last season. The reminder of four straight losses — including one by two points in overtime in Montgomery, Ala., last month — was meant to provide a bit of extra motivation for his team. Turns out, they didn’t really need it.

UAPB Golden Lions Coach George Ivory gets first win against Alabama State University Hornets.

The three seniors on the team who began as freshman in 2006 reminded the coach — and their teammates who have since arrived — that nobody really knows when UAPB last beat Alabama State. They just knew that nobody on the court at the time had ever done it. “It’s been a four-year curse since I’ve been here,” forward Tyree Glass said. Glass, Terrance Calvin and George Davis, the three who arrived on campus four years ago, all played roles in ending the string of losses on Monday. In the slowest-paced game the Golden Lions (8-14, 8-3) have played this season, they outlasted the two-time defending Southwestern Athletic Conference champions in a 47-42 win.

UAPB Golden Lions jockey for SWAC position

PINE BLUFF, Arkansas - Those dreams of a No. 1 seed in the Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament pretty much ended a month ago for Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Not too recently, a No. 2 spot became an impossibility as well. But the Golden Lions are looking at a possible third-place conference finish after polishing off Grambling State 69-61 Saturday at Clemmons Arena.

With two games left in the regular season, including an ESPNU televised home game with Jackson State tomorrow, Arkansas-Pine Bluff still can overtake Prairie View A&M for third place in the SWAC. Thanks to Prairie View A&M losing Saturday, the two teams are tied for third.

UAPB Golden Lions head basketball coach George Ivory

Better yet, the Golden Lions' offensive play Saturday hinted at a team peaking just in time for the postseason. Arkansas-Pine Bluff (11-16, 10-6 SWAC) put the Tigers on their heels early, taking a 17-2 lead in the first seven minutes and shooting 59 percent from the floor in the first half. On the way, the Golden Lions revealed a new offensive wrinkle: three-point shooting.

One of the league's shakiest teams from behind the arc, Arkansas-Pine Bluff made five of nine three-point attempts in the first half, starting with an early one by Tyree Glass that put the Golden Lions up 8-0. "They've been working pretty hard at the threes," Arkansas-Pine Bluff Coach George Ivory said. "They're better focused on offense."
