Stillman Tigers seeking homecoming win

TUSCALOOSA, Alabama - The Stillman Tigers have achieved a winning record in Teddy Keaton’s first season as coach. If they win today’s homecoming game, they’ll have the best mark since joining the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association in 2005.

“I tell my kids homecoming is not really for you right now,” said Keaton, a 1999 Stillman graduate. “Homecoming is for the alumni and the people that come back and support them. I really believe people are coming back to homecoming to see what we’ve done with this program in this short amount of time. I’m excited about some of my classmates coming back.

“More importantly, I want to make sure my team stays focused and that we don’t forget what’s at stake here; what’s the ultimate goal about finishing and not overlooking your opponent. Let the alumni and everybody else celebrate, and you stay focused on what we came here to do today.”

Alcorn State crushes Concordia - Selma 58-16

LORMAN, Mississippi — Darius Smith threw four touchdown passes and ran for another score as Alcorn State crushed Concordia-Selma 58-16 on Saturday. Smith finished 9 of 18 for 162 yards passing with an interception for the Braves (2-4), and Arnold Walker added 115 yards on 21 carries.

The Braves actually trailed Concordia-Selma of the NAIA 6-0 early in the opening quarter, but then ripped off 51 straight points to sink the Hornets. Smith’s scores opened and closed the run, including 41- and 18-yard touchdown passes to Terrance Lewis and a 10-yard scoring scamper.

Alcorn State tallied five interceptions off three separate Concordia quarterbacks, and William Thomas returned one of those 45 yards for a score. Terrance Jenkins also ran back a blocked punt for a 42-yard touchdown for the Braves.

Grambling crushes Concordia

GRAMBLING, Louisiana — Grambling piled 16 points onto the scoreboard in the final 2:45 of the second quarter Saturday to provide a comfortable 30-0 lead by halftime. The Tigers (2-4, 1-3) added another two touchdowns after the break to claim the eventual 44-0 victory against visiting nonconference Concordia (4-3, 1-1).

"The kids have worked their behinds off — the ball just hasn't bounced for us," coach Doug Williams said. "Today the ball bounced our way a little bit."

Both teams started slowly until Grambling broke out of somewhat of a funk with a first-quarter screen pass from sophomore quarterback Frank Rivers to Mario Louis. The senior receiver broke tackles and took off downfield for an explosive 70-yard score.  Running back Dawrence Roberts capped a 71-yard drive two possessions later with a 1-yard touchdown for a 14-0 lead.

Louis Manning, RB

Jackson State struggled to stop the run last season, allowing more than 190 yards rushing in five games. It'll take more than one game - especially one against a team that doesn't offer athletic scholarships - to show the unit has improved, but slowing the Hornets' veteran running back Manning is crucial.

Unit that could give Tigers fits:
Middle linebackers

How about the only unit that completely returns? The Hornets return just five starters and two of those are linebackers Javonne Roman and Cruz Forbes.

Concordia gets an overhaul with only 5 starters returning

Selma, AL - Shepherd Skanes won't be wearing a hard hat this fall, but no one could blame the Concordia College head football if he did. Skanes has some major rebuilding to do after the Hornets lost 12 seniors from their 2010 team that finished 6-4.

"I had the biggest graduation class I've had in a while," Skanes said. "Eight of 12 got degrees. They had been with me since 2007. We have only five starters who showed back up for this season."

Senior inside linebacker Javonne Roman and senior outside linebacker Cruz Forbes are the only two returning starters on defense, while tailback Louis Manning, wide receiver Jeremy Morris and center Steven Welch are the only three back on offense for the Selma school.

"We had some young guys, freshmen and sophomores, who played last year...
