Alcorn Braves pointing up

Excerpts:

Ernest Jones has no problem speaking his mind. Remember, this is the first-year coach who proclaims Alcorn State will compete for a Southwestern Athletic Conference championship this season, despite astonishing odds against it. Jones has tried to combat the losing mentality with high energy and expectations. But he looked at the seat to his right when asked what was most important for on-field success at the SWAC Media Day in Birmingham. Sitting there was senior linebacker Lee Robinson.

"Defense is the strength of our football team," Jones said. "We'll go as far Lee Robinson will carry us, as he'll lead us. The defense is going to have to carry us until the offense catches up." Jones wants to exploit the entire field by playing quicker and getting the ball snapped within seven seconds of it being set in play. He plans to have a 50-50 run-pass ratio and wants to give the defense something to think about with a variety of formations.

Alcorn looks for success with new coach

LORMAN — Since Ernest Jones was hired as Alcorn State’s football coach last December, the mantra for the program has been, “It’s a new day.” That new day arrives Aug. 30 when the Braves host Southeastern Louisiana at Jack Spinks Stadium.

“I’m chomping at the bit,” Jones said. “I want it to get here, but I’m not in that big of a hurry. We need these days to prepare. We just want to get out there.”

Since Jones was hired, excitement around the Alcorn program has been at a fever pitch. Now, the coach knows his team must produce results on the field to keep the excitement level up. “The fanfare has been very positive,” Jones said. “The alumni and administration are excited and we expect to sell the stadium out on Aug. 30. It’s time for the fans to see something exciting and positive and we plan to give them that.”

Kids work with former MVP Steve McNair

A chance to learn some life lessons and brush up on some football skills, all while brushing shoulders with a local legend, brought some 700 youngsters out on a scorching-hot morning. The 10th annual Steve Air McNair Football Camp drew a large, enthusiastic crowd Friday to the University of Southern Mississippi campus, where the focus was on more than just football.

"We have a lot of people here talking about alcohol, drugs and crime," McNair said. "We touch a little of everything to try to get kids on the right track. It's about life. You can't succeed on the field if your life is not on track. Football comes second to that."

This is the first year the camp, which was free of charge, has come to the USM campus, after previously being held at Gulf Coast Community College, Alcorn State and in Nashville, Tenn., where McNair played for the Tennessee Titans.

ASU Braves up ante on coaches' salaries

AD Hamilton ushers in change as athletic budget goes from $3.1M to $4.5M

Alcorn State announced the hiring of its third new head coach since December on Tuesday. And for the third time, the athletic department made a significant financial commitment.

Tonya Edwards will make her Division I head coaching debut for the Alcorn State women's basketball program this fall. Athletic director Darren Hamilton signed Edwards to a four-year, $95,000-a-year deal. Alcorn football coach Ernest Jones was hired at $140,000 per year, a $55,000 increase over his predecessor, Johnny Thomas. Larry Smith received a $125,000 base salary when he was hired to replace Sam West in May.

Both Hamilton and Edwards repeated the mantra started when Jones was hired - that it's a new day at Alcorn State and the bar has been raised.

LORMAN, MS — After several weeks of searching, Alcorn State has found its new women’s basketball coach. ASU Athletic Director Darren Hamilton announced Monday that the school has hired Tonya Edwards as the new coach of the Lady Braves, pending approval of the board of trustees.

Alcorn State Fires Women Basketball Coach

On Thursday, Alcorn State Athletic Director Dr. Darren J. Hamilton announced that longtime coach Shirley A. Walker has been removed of her duties. Walker has been running the Braves program for the last thirty years and posted a record of 492-332.

In 2006, the basketball program received a one-year postseason ban and a three-year probation. The Braves lost one scholarship and had to remove all references to their 2005 NCAA Tournament appearance. The NCAA cited a lack of institutional control that included violations such as the use of ineligible players, giving improper financial-aid benefits and travel expenses, exceeding weekly practice limits, failing to provide a day off from practice each week, and allowing non-certified assistant coaches to recruit off-campus.

Fighting an Uphill Battle...Why Division I-AA and II Get The Cold Shoulder

Next time someone mentions a Division I-AA or Division II school or player to you, research the player. Research the school. Because odds are that player is better than 90% of your favorite BCS team's roster.

I-AA Winston Salem State University had an NFL 4th Round (#103) draft pick in Defensive End, Willaim Hayes (Tennessee Titans). (Photo by Mark's Digitial Sports Photography).

What happened along the way? Back in the "Good ole' days," we saw small schools being held in, actually, high regard when it came to college football. Grambling was respected, Alcorn State, Mississippi Valley State, Jackson State, etc.

Now, when someone mentions that a Division I-AA school did this (FCS? What? Stop with that.), or a Division II did that, the first response is "Who cares?" I'll tell you who cares. Quick, name the alma maters of Steve McNair, Jerry Rice, and Walter Payton.

They were all named above.

Steve McNair, one of only a handful of college football players in history to pass for 10,000 career yards and rush for 3,000 career yards, attended Alcorn State and even made a run at a Heisman trophy.

Stadium's future now lies in Jackson State's, DFA's hands

For anyone looking seriously at the future of Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium, the numbers tell the tale. The last time Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium was filled to capacity was 1984, when Alcorn State University took on Mississippi Valley State University for the 1984 SWAC championship. Alcorn beat Valley 42-28 before 63,808 fans.

Originally called Mississippi Memorial Stadium, the stadium was proposed as a 35,000-seat monument to the state's veterans of World Wars I and II. The stadium was later completed to the 46,000 seat level in the 1950s.

The stadium often had capacity crowds for Southeastern Conference games in the 1960s and 1970s - crowds swelling to the point that in 1980, the decision was made to expand the stadium by 16,500 seats to 62,500 seats. Subsequent renovations dropped the current seating to the official 60,492 seats.

“I know it’s not going to be easy,” said Smith, who signed a four-year contract with a $125,000 base salary. “But this thing’s going to happen. Believe me, I’m here for the duration. It’s not going to be easy getting rid of me.

Smith spent 23 years as a player and coach in the NBA and was an assistant with the Los Angeles Sparks of the WNBA until last week. He was an assistant with the Houston Rockets when they won NBA titles in 1994 and ’95.

Alcorn's Steve McNair left lasting impression

Where do I start in talking about former Alcorn State quarterback Steve McNair, who announced his retirement from the Baltimore Ravens last week? The many last-second wins at Henderson Stadium and then Jack Spinks Stadium where a concert-like crowd was treated to another rock-star type performance?

Steve McNair NFL Retirement Speech

The guy who went from saying maybe four sentences a game following a game his freshman year to a go who talked with ease with the country smile when he was a senior? The guy who played through so much pain and through so many injuries that bandage companies probably lost revenue after he left town?

New Alcorn AD Hamilton set to lead Braves' transition

Fundraising, hiring of men's basketball coach high on list of priorities

A billboard reading "In Transition" would be appropriate on the stretch of Highway 61heading into Lorman. In the last five months Alcorn State has welcomed a new president (George Ross), a new football coach (Ernest Jones) and a new athletic director (Darren Hamilton).

Samuel West was fired the day before Hamilton started last week, so a new basketball coach is on the way. "I'm sure it's a transitional phase," Hamilton, 44, said. "It's a very vibrant time on campus. "I think everybody is really, really hungry and ready to bring it back to the level of excellence and envy that was there in the past."

NFL Vikings give Frazier contract extension, title of assistant head coach

Photo: Former Alcorn State University football/baseball player Leslie Frazier is now Assistant Head Coach/Defensive Coordinator for the Minnesota Vikings.

The Vikings formalized defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier's dual role within their organization, adding "assistant head coach" to his title on Wednesday. As part of the promotion, Frazier's contract was extended through the 2009 season.

Although the additional title is largely ceremonial in the NFL, Frazier said it "kind of makes things official" after he spent much of the past year advising coach Brad Childress on "everything ... from top to bottom, on our roster."

Alcorn State douses Hornets' SWAC flame

Photo: Alabama State University head coach Lewis Jackson.

Alabama State has a "blackout" night planned for Monday's game against Southern University. But Saturday's game against Alcorn State was an unannounced flameout night. Against the SWAC's last-place team, the first-place Hornets shot a paltry 11 percent from behind the 3-point line (2-of-17), were out-rebounded 34-27 and were generally out-hustled most of the night. Worst beat first, 73-69.

"They just play hard and tough and they come out here tonight and took it to us," ASU head coach Lewis Jackson said of his team's second home loss of the year. "It was a bad night for us from the free throw line, a bad night from behind the 3-point line and a bad night around the basket. Just overall, we didn't play well and we need to regroup somewhat."

Alcorn State facing constant battles as Division I have-not

ALCORN STATE, Miss. -- The bus rocked gently, bringing the Alcorn State basketball team back from its pregame meal. Standing in the aisle, sophomore Troy Jackson held on to the back of a seat as he recited from memory a few lines of "The Negro Speaks of Rivers."

I've known rivers.
I've known rivers ancient as the world and older than the flow of human blood in human veins.
