Benedict wins first game under Woody over Clark Atlanta

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict College Tigers rushed for a season-high 185 yards against one of the top defenses in the SIAC to take a hard-earned 10-7 Homecoming victory over the Clark Atlanta Panthers on Saturday at Charlie W. Johnson Stadium.

Tyquan Bazemore rushed for a season-high 80 yards, and Milton Myers rushed for a season-high 72 yards for the Tigers, who improved to 2-5 overall and 1-3 in the SIAC. “Our game plan was to run the ball,” said interim head coach James Woody. “We wanted to establish the run and then open up our screen passes and vertical game.”

Benedict finished with 267 total yards of offense against a Clark Atlanta team that ranked third in the SIAC, allowing just 122 yards rushing per game. The Panthers entered the game ranked 41st in the nation in total defense.




But the Tigers were the one to stand out defensively on Saturday. Clark Atlanta finished with 176 yards of total offense and had just 71 in the first half.

Benedict Tigers earn first win of 2011

COLUMBIA, SC – Emmanuel Houston scored three touchdowns to lead the Benedict College Tigers to their first football victory of the season, 23-17 victory over the Shaw University Bears in a non-conference NCAA Division II game Saturday at Charlie W. Johnson Stadium.

This week the Tigers won the turnover battle, intercepting Shaw's freshman quarterback Homer Causey three times, including once in the end zone, and recovering one fumble.




“We had a good week of practice, and I thought we would play that way,” said Benedict head coach Stan Conner. “We still had some unforced errors we have to eliminate, but we are on the right track.”

The Tigers, now 1-2, return to action on Thursday night to face Fort Valley State at home in a regionally-televised game. Kickoff is 8 p.m. at Charlie W. Johnson Stadium.

Virginia Union blanks Benedict to win Palmetto Capital City Classic, 27-0

COLUMBIA, SC - Virginia Union University capitalized on four Benedict College turnovers to beat the Tigers 27-0 in the 10th annual Palmetto Capital City Classic Saturday at Charlie W. Johnson Stadium on Saturday.

The Tigers (0-1) lost their season opener and the Palmetto Capital City Classic for the second straight year. Virginia Union improved to 2-0 on the season.

The Tigers took the opening kickoff and drove to the Virginia Union 12-yard line before losing the first fumble of the day and ending the scoring threat. After the Panthers had taken a 7-0 lead in the second quarter, the Tigers saw another drive snuffed when quarterback Johnny Carson had the ball ripped out of his hands and Virginia Union's Antonio Harris raced 58 yards for another VUU touchdown.

Date of FVSU vs. Benedict College Football Game Changed

Fort Valley, GA - The Fort Valley State University vs. Benedict College Football Game originally scheduled for Saturday, September 24, 2011 has been changed to Thursday, September 22, 2011. Kick-off for the Thursday night game is 8 p.m. at Charles W. Johnson Stadium in Columbia, South Carolina.

The game has been rescheduled to accommodate a televised broadcast by CSS, the regional cable provider which covers 13 Southeastern states. The game will be available for viewing by over 6 million homes who subscribe to Comcast Cable.

Benedict College pumped for TV games

COLUMBIA, SC - The Benedict College football team will make a couple of appearances on the tube this season. It was announced Friday that Benedict's season opener against Virginia Union September 3rd will be televised by CSS. The Palmetto Capital City Classic will now start at 3:30 p.m. instead of 5:00 p.m.

The Tigers game against Fort Valley State also will also be broadcast by CSS. That game has been moved from September 24th to Thursday, September 22nd and will start at 8:00 p.m.

Senior powers Morehouse Tigers golf to victory

Olajuwon Ajanaku can finally cut his hair. The Morehouse College senior wanted to wait until he won a tournament, and his three-round total of 8-over-par 224 was more than enough as Ajanaku placed first individually and his team won the SIAC Golf Classic at par-72 Jones Creek Golf Club on Wednesday.

"I've never seen this much hair on my face," Ajanaku said with a smile.



Morehouse had four of the top five scorers as it ended at 69-over-par for a comfortable victory. The victory gave Bill Lewis coach of the year honors as Morehouse won for the third consecutive year. Benedict College came in second at 135-over and Kentucky State grabbed third at 182-over. Paine College was next in fourth place at 226-over and LeMoyne-Owen College rounded out the team scores at 370-over.

Benedict College Tigers Release 2011 Football Schedule

Columbia, SC-- Athletic Director Willie Washington, Head Football Coach Stanley Conner and the Benedict Tigers, have announced its complete 2011 football schedule for the upcoming Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference season.

The Tigers will play a total of 11 games, five at home, five away, and one conference game at a neutral site (Augusta City Classic). Benedict’s schedule will feature three classics, the Palmetto Kick-Off Classic against new Central Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (CIAA) opponent Virginia Union University, the South Carolina Historically Black College and University Classic (SCHBCU) versus another CIAA opponent Shaw University, and the Augusta City Classic against Miles College.

Benedict will open its season on Saturday, September 3rd against the Panthers of Virginia Union in the Palmetto Kick-Off Classic. The following week the Tigers will hit the road to face-off against CIAA power, Bowie State University. The Tigers will then have a two game home-stand that includes contests against the Bears of Shaw University in the SCHBCU Classic and on Saturday September 24th by facing off with the Wildcats of Fort Valley State University.

On Saturday October 1, the Tigers will hit the gridiron against the Golden Bears of Miles College in the Augusta City Classic in Augusta, GA.

During the second week in October the Tigers will be on the road traveling to Tuscaloosa, Alabama to face off against Stillman College and then on October 15, return home to the Charlie W. Johnson Football Stadium to hit the gridiron against the Clark Atlanta Panthers on Homecoming.

On October 22, the Tigers will head back on the road and collide with the Maroon Tigers of Morehouse College. The following week the Tigers will travel again to Albany, Georgia and trade blows with Mighty Rams of Albany State University. The final home game of the 2011 season is set for Senior Recognition Day/High School Day on November 5th against the Blue Dragons of Lane College.

“With the announcement of the schedule, the 2011 season is definitely upon us. We are excited to kick off another season with our participation in three Classics,” said Willie Washington.

Benedict finished the 2010 season with a 5-6 overall record, while going 4-5 in the SIAC.

Arkansas Tech snatch NCAA victory from Benedict Tigers' Jaws

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. -- #4 seed Arkansas Tech led the ball game just twice in the second half, but when the final buzzer sounded, they'd come away with a 61-58 victory over Benedict College in the final quarterfinal of the 2011 NCAA Division II Men's Basketball South Regional Championship.

The Wonder Boys snatched victory from the Tigers when James Giles stole the ball and fed Johnie Davis. Davis made his shot and was fouled. Down 58-57, Davis drained the free throw to bring the game even with :43 left. He then addressed the media after the game, saying, "I had to draw contact and make sure I made the bucket."

Benedict took their time in their next offensive set, trying to burn precious time off of the clock. Pressure from Arkansas Tech forced a turnover by Anton Green with 13 left on the shot clock. "We had a good game plan going in," Benedict coach Fred Watson said. "We didn’t close the game well."

Davis then found an open Laithe Massey, who squared up and drilled a three-pointer with three seconds left in regulation. "Johnie made a great pass right in my chest," Massey said. "I knew time was winding down and I just let it go, luckily it went in."

Benedict Defeats Morehouse On Senior Night

Columbia, SC (WLTX) --- Xavier Collier scored 25 points and five assists to lead Benedict to a 72-63 win over Morehouse College Tuesday night, clinching the SIAC regular season title for the Tigers.

Marcus Goode, the reigning SIAC player of the week, scored 22 points and pulled down 14 rebounds for Benedict which won its fourth SIAC regular season championship in the Fred Watson era.

FVSU Wildcats gain their homecoming revenge

FORT VALLEY, GA — About two-thirds of the way through the third quarter, running back Aaron Courtney was stopped at the line, but he disposed of the two Benedict tacklers who had him wrapped up and raced 22 yards for a touchdown.

That gave Fort Valley State a two-touchdown lead, and the Wildcats could breathe a little bit. Homecoming appeared to be saved, and the weekend would be a good one for FVSU. FVSU’s defense surrendered only a few big plays and the Wildcats blocked two punts and rolled past Benedict 41-13 on Saturday afternoon at Wildcat Stadium.

The crowd was announced at 12,455 watched FVSU improve to 4-1 overall and 3-1 in SIAC play. Benedict fell to 1-5 and 1-4.

Adams leads Benedict to shutout of Stillman

COLUMBIA, S.C. Sophomore quarterback Michael Adams ran for two touchdowns and threw for two more on Saturday to lead Benedict College to a 35-0 victory over Stillman College in a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game.

Adams gained 107 yards on 13 carries, with his longest gain going for a 61-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter. He completed 7 of 14 passes for 193 yards and one interception. Stillman gained 100 yards rushing on 33 attempts. Chester Hightower led Stillman with 69 yards on 22 carries. His longest run went for 23 yards. The Benedict defense intercepted five passes and allowed 48 passing yards.




Benedict Picks Up Its First Win Of 2010

Backup quarterback Michael Adams helped Benedict jump out to a 21-0 lead as the Tigers cruised to a 35-0 win over Stillman Saturday at Charlie W. Johnson Stadium.

Adams got the start in place of Pat Riley who did not practice this week as a result of an undisclosed injury. Riley did dress out and was on the sidelines with his team which used a quick-striking offense and a tough defense to earn its first win of the season.

South Carolina State Defeats Benedict 61-20

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Chris Massey and Asheton Jordan each rushed for more than 100 yards and two touchdowns as South Carolina State routed Benedict 61-20 on Saturday. Massey, a senior, had 20 carries for 148 yards and scored on runs of 11 and 2 yards while Jordan, a sophomore, had 14 carries for 126 yards and scored twice from 2 yards out.

Jordan came into the game averaging 103.3 yards.The Bulldogs (2-1) had their highest scoring total since beating Morgan State 65-15 in 2005. South Carolina State rolled up 415 yards total offense, 371 on the ground, before a record crowd of 13,334 in the HBCU Classic.

SC State thunders past Benedict Tigers, 61-20

COLUMBIA - For a brief moment, all of South Carolina State's worst fears manifested at once Saturday at a sold-out Charlie W. Johnson Stadium.

A lethargic showing on the first two series offensively had the Bulldogs backed near their own end zone by Benedict College. The Tigers and fans among the record-13,334 in attendance were further electrified with 6:20 left in the first quarter when Marquez Gibson blocked Blake Erickson's punt and an on-the-spot Domenic Sivera retrieved it in the air at the six before heading for a touchdown. Add sweltering on-field temperatures which had some Bulldog players battling cramps and it was nervous time on the S.C. State sidelines.

TUSKEGEE 34, BENEDICT 18: Just another solid start for the Golden Tigers

TUSKEGEE, AL -- As far as season openers go, Tuskegee head coach Willie Slater thought this one was pretty typical. It was exciting, it was hard-fought and it left a lot of room for improvement. later brushed off some stretches of sloppy play the Golden Tigers displayed in a 34-18 home win against Benedict College on Saturday.

"We played like it was the first game," Slater said. "We played with good effort. We committed a lot of penalties, but all those mistakes are coachable. We turned the ball over, but I don't think they were crucial turnovers because we were ahead."

Nykeem Barton made all of his 37 rushing yards count by scoring three touchdowns. Josh Harris was 14-of-23 passing for 247 yards with a touchdown. Benedict's Renando Rose led all rushers with 72 yards.

Six turnovers are too much for Benedict to overcome in season opener

COLUMBIA, S.C. - Benedict’s dream of a storybook season began with a depressing opening chapter on Saturday at Charlie W. Johnson Stadium. The Tigers fell behind early, rallied to take the lead, then lost 34-27 in overtime to Morehouse in the ninth annual Palmetto Capital City Classic in front of 7,629 fans.

The loss ends Benedict’s five-game winning streak in the Palmetto Capital City Classic. More important, the loss quickly puts the Tigers in a precarious position in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference — Benedict plays at defending conference champion Tuskegee next weekend. “We had took many turnovers, too many penalties at crucial times and too many breakdowns on both sides of the ball,” Benedict coach Stan Conner said.

“The only good thing was we had a lot of chances to quit, and didn’t. We kept playing hard and somehow forced the game into overtime. No doubt about it, this is a loss that is going to challenge the character of this football team.”

Benedict Tigers Riley focuses on results

Columbia, S.C. --Pat Riley knows the deal. The talented Benedict College senior quarterback is aware of his importance to the Tigers’ hopes for challenging for the SIAC championship and a NCAA Division II playoff berth. Riley is the face of the team, the man in the spotlight and the guy on the hot seat. But what matters to the Attapulgus, Ga., native is the bottom line.

The Tigers broke through for an 8-3 record last season, Riley’s first in Columbia. The quest for greater glory begins with Saturday’s SIAC date against Morehouse in the 9th annual Palmetto Capital City Classic at Charlie W. Johnson Stadium.

“I’m a competitor and I know I get pulled out a lot because of my position, but in no way am I an ‘I’ player,” Riley said. “My success depends on the team’s success. It’s not about the offense or the defense or special teams this season. It’s about the Benedict Tigers as a group. There are no individual agendas on this team.”

At this rate, Benedict College might get a Chick-Fil-A Bowl invitation before long. The Tigers in their breakthrough season of 2009 went 8-3, the best record since the school took up football again in 1995.

Led by versatile quarterback Pat Riley, head coach Stanley Conner's team won eight of its last nine games and finished 6-3 in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. It was an exciting leap for a program that went 7-15 the previous two years. Riley returns for his senior season as the SIAC's 2009 leader in total offense. The 6-0, 180-pound native of Attapulgus, Ga., rushed for 1,088 yards and threw for 887 in Benedict's option style offense.

Jeffries gets key to city

Fresh from induction ceremonies at the College Football Hall of Fame last month, Willie Jeffries found himself in the spotlight again on Monday at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center.

The legendary coach, who spent the majority of his 29-year career as South Carolina State, was the guest of honor at a reception hosted by the Palmetto Capital City Classic committee and the City of Columbia that kicked off a week of activities leading to Saturday’s game between Benedict College and Morehouse at Charlie W. Johnson Stadium.

Mayor Steve Benjamin presented Jeffries with a key to the city.

QB Riley runs Benedict on right path

Coach Stan Conner arrived at Benedict in 2007 with the stated goal of leading the mired-in-mediocrity Tigers to a SIAC championship. Conner endured a 7-15 record his first two seasons, but he never stopped scouring the nation’s junior-college ranks for players whose skills fit into his system.

Last year, Benedict finished with an 8-3 record — winning eight of its final nine games to land in a tie for third place with Morehouse behind Albany State and champion Tuskeegee. Now, the Tigers figure to reach title-contender status for the first time since the school revived the sport, initially as a club team, in 1995. “We’re getting to the point where we have the talent in place to make a run,” Conner said. “The schedule is front-loaded again (season-opening games against Morehouse and Tuskegee), but if we get through that OK we should have a shot.”

The program’s rise can be attributed to the arrival of Pat Riley — Conner’s first quarterback recruiting coop.

Benedict To Face Morehouse In Palmetto Classic

The ninth annual Palmetto Capital City Classic is set for Aug. 28 and it will be Tigers vs Tigers as Benedict hosts Morehouse College from Atlanta. The game will kick off at 4:00 p.m. at Charlie W. Johnson Stadium. For Benedict head coach Stan Conner, the Classic is like a bowl game for his players because of all the festivities leading up to the game.

The game will also give Conner a gauge as to how his team will stack up against a proven opponent. Last year in Atlanta, Morehouse defeated Benedict 34-13. The Tigers would get hot down the stretch and finish with an 8-3 record, thanks in part to stellar play by quarterback Pat Riley. The Maroon Tigers from Atlanta ended the year 7-3. Conner says playing Morehouse to open the season, followed by games against Tuskegee and South Carolina State is like "going from the frying pan into another hot skillet".

Benedict College Charlie W. Johnson Football Stadium opened Sept. 2006 with a capacity for 11,000 seats --expandable to 17,000 seats, located on a 61 acre tract contiguous to the Columbia-Sumter Empowerment Zone.

Former Bainbridge (Ga.) High School Bearcats All-Region 1AAAA quarterback and track sprinter Patrick Riley continues to excel on the football field at Benedict College in Columbia, S.C. As a junior last season, he led the Benedict Tigers to a strong 8-3 overall record and a 6-3 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) mark. Riley was named second team All SIAC in 2009. He rushed for 1,088 yards and 12 touchdowns and passed for 887 yards and eight touchdowns.

One of the Tigers’ key victories last season, a 28-20 homecoming win over the Fort Valley State University Wildcats, featured some late-game heroics by Riley. They took a 21-17 lead when Riley scored on a nine-yard run around the right side. He set up the touchdown with a 37-yard touchdown pass to teammate Corey Gardhigh. Before transferring to Benedict, Riley had two outstanding seasons quarterbacking the Eastern Arizona Junior College Gila Monsters in Thatcher, Arizona.
