Delaware State's Moore hitting stride

Photo: Laronne Moore is a former QB at Prince George's County (MD) Northwestern H.S., that has 4.29 speed in the 40 yard dash. As a Hornet WR, the 6-0/180 junior will be a dangerous weapon in the DSU offense.

Wide receiver learning fast after just one season at new position

DOVER -- Nothing Laronne Moore does suggests rookie. At 6-foot tall, Moore has that sinewy, streamlined leanness of a veteran wide receiver. He can reach out to pull in a pass even the best sometimes miss.

But the Delaware State junior is quick to remind people that last season was his first year playing wide receiver. Now, Moore is the Hornets' heir apparent.

"This is actually my first spring football," Moore said Saturday at Alumni Stadium. "I'm ready to take over. I hope I can do all they expect me to be."

DSU, which finished 10-2 last season and won its first Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference title since 1991, will need Moore to reinvigorate its passing game. DSU ranked seventh out of the nine MEAC teams with just 134 receiving yards per game.

Coppin State Eagles advance to MEAC Championship Game

Photo: Rashida Suber will be playing in her third MEAC Tournament Championship game in four years.

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Coppin State seniors Shalamar Oakley and Rashida Suber combined to score 33 points and the Eagles used a stifling defensive effort to advance to the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament Championship game with a 63-56 victory over Delaware State.

The Eagles will meet regular-season champion North Carolina A&T at 1 p.m. on Saturday (March 15) with the winner gaining the league's automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.

Oakley scored 17 points and Suber added 16 as the Eagles advanced to the MEAC Tournament Championship game for the third time in four years.

Welcher's follow puts Delaware State in semis

Photo: DSU head basketball coach Greg Jackson said, "This game epitomized our season."

Freshman steals spotlight

RALEIGH, N.C. -- It could have been Roy Bright's night Thursday. For the most part it was, until a freshman stepped up and stole the senior's show.

First-year guard Trevor Welcher's rebound basket with 1.7 seconds left gave Delaware State a 64-62 win over North Carolina A&T in the quarterfinals of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference men's basketball tournament at the RBC Center.

The Hornets (14-15), seeded fourth, move on to play top seed and regular-season champion Morgan State (21-9) in today's 6 p.m. semifinals. The other semifinal pits third seed Norfolk State against No. 7 Coppin State.

DSU Bright hits milestone as Hornets end skid

Photo: Senor guard Roy Bright scored his first career double/double against the UMES Hawks. The 6-6 Hornets star hit for 18 points and pulled down 10 rebounds.

Senior scores his 1,000th point at DSU in win

DOVER -- His first attempt sailed through with ease. The second, just another pretty shot again from beyond the arc.

By the time Roy Bright had made his third and fourth baskets in five attempts Thursday, he'd gotten his milestone and his Delaware State team essentially had the lead it needed for an important victory.

This was actually Senior Day and, perhaps more importantly, a day of redemption during a 67-52 victory over Maryland-Eastern Shore at Memorial Hall.

DSU men suffer letdown against FAMU

Photo: FAMU high scorer Leslie Robinson hit for 24 poinsts, 3 reb., and 1 assist. The 6-0/180 senior guard is from Rockford, IL/Highland CC.

DOVER, DE — One was fun. They said two proved the program grew. And three was sweet victory. But the Delaware State men’s basketball team’s dream of four is no more. DSU’s quest to win at least a share of its fourth straight Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference regular-season title came to a whimpering halt tonight with a 70-58 loss to Florida A&M before a groan-filled crowd at Memorial Hall.

The Rattlers (11-16 overall, 7-7 MEAC) beat the Hornets (12-14, 9-5) in almost every aspect to become the first MEAC opponent to sweep a season series from DSU since 2004-05.

DSU's Sandidge's effort saves victory over BCU Wildcats

DOVER -- Virtually all season, Delaware State men's basketball coach Greg Jackson has served notice he's looking for players who will give their best effort, and then some, every game. To his dismay, that particular request has gone largely unanswered, according to him, with one notable exception.

Sophomore center Frisco Sandidge, perhaps the one Hornets player who's made a difference by contributing a consistent effort, produced his best game of the season Saturday in a 49-44 victory over Bethune-Cookman before 1,031 at Memorial Hall.

Delaware State's McBride hopes to get noticed in combine

Photo: McBride runs for touchdown against Coastal Carolina University during '07 Hornet season.

INDIANAPOLIS -- Shaheer McBride isn't used to working slowly. Most wide receivers pride themselves on speed and quickness. But at the NFL scouting combine, he's doing his best to stay patient.

Prospects hurry from interview to interview with teams. They undergo physical exams. They run through drills. They take intelligence tests. "It's a long process," said McBride, a former Delaware State standout. "It's a lot of stuff you have to go through. You definitely have to be patient."

Bright night for DSU Hornets

Photo: DSU 6-6/225 guard/forward Roy Bright hit for 19 points, 8 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 block and 1 steal to lead the Hornets attack against the Aggies.

North Carolina native leads DSU to crucial MEAC win over NCA&T.

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Roy Bright took the abuse from the Dawg Pound and responded Monday night with a smile and a game-winning basket.

Playing in his home state and before a large contingent of family and friends, Bright delivered. He led Delaware State to a crucial Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference men's basketball victory, 70-66, over North Carolina A&T before a rowdy Corbett Sports Center crowd of 3,752.

A native of Durham, N.C., Bright finished with 19 points.

DSU to enter crazy confines of Corbett

Photo: Interior of Corbett Sports Center, North Carolina A&T State University.

A&T's gym known for frat-like atmosphere

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Among the words used to describe Ellis F. Corbett on a bronze plaque outside the building named in his honor is fraternity leader. The plaque was made 30 years ago, but perhaps the ones responsible had the ability to know what the future held.

There is maybe no better way to describe the activities inside Corbett Sports Center, a non-descript, white brick building set in the monstrous downtown campus at North Carolina A&T, than frat-like.

Once inside the door on a game night, expect to stand shoulder to shoulder.

With the onslaught of rap music over the loudspeakers, forget about being able to hear the person next to you. But that's the charm. It awaits every opponent that enters its confines, like the Delaware State men's basketball team tonight.

The game, to broadcast on ESPNU, tips off at 7.

Delaware State Lady Hornets get solid play from bench

Photo: Selena Galloway scored 12 points, 1 rebound and 1 steal against Norfolk State. The 5-8 Sophomore guard is from James Ferris H.S., Jersey City, NJ.

NORFOLK, Va. -- Every game that teams from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play brings them one step closer to the grand finale of the season: the conference tournament. On Saturday afternoon, during the first game of his team's last road trip of the regular season, Coach Ed Davis had a big chance to tweak the little things -- like the play of his bench -- which, in the end, could help the Hornets to a second consecutive tournament championship.

With a highly productive performance from their reserves, the Hornets shot a season-high 57 percent from the floor to breeze by Norfolk State, 81-55, at Echols Hall. In improving its overall record to over .500 for the first time this season, DSU (13-12, 8-3 MEAC) scored its most points since putting up 87 against Howard in the 2005-06 season.

Delaware State needs some help to win fourth MEAC title

Photo: Forward Roy Bright #45 leads the Hornets in scoring and is in second place in the MEAC scoring race averaging 18.7 ppg.

Confident Hornets ready for second-place Norfolk State

DOVER -- The next two weeks will decide if Delaware State will be crowned a four-time Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference men's basketball champion or have its streak of regular-season titles end.

Trailing first-place Morgan State by two games, the Hornets begin their mission tonight when they travel to Norfolk State (12-10, 8-2 MEAC). Hornets coach Greg Jackson is skeptical about his team's chances. He said the confidence gained by beating Hampton and Howard in the Hornets' past two games isn't enough to propel his team past Morgan State (15-8, 9-1) and to a fourth straight title.

Delaware State gets offensive, rout Howard University

Photo: DSU senior Roy Bright had another monster game--scoring a game-high 26 points on 10-for-14 shooting from the field, with 6-of-10 on 3-pointers, 5 rebounds and 1 assist in 28 minutes of action.

Hornets score 29 straight points to rout Howard

DOVER -- Message to the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference: Delaware State still believes it's the "top dog" in the hunt for the league's men's basketball championship. The Hornets exhibited what coach Greg Jackson said was the best offensive effort in his eight years at the school in an 81-55 victory over Howard on Monday night at Memorial Hall.

DSU, coming off a win over Hampton on Saturday, parlayed that performance into an uncharacteristic offensive explosion in the first half, shooting at a blistering 78 percent clip and reeling off a 29-0 run.

Delaware State is now tied with Hampton University for third place in the conference standing. Norfolk State is playing the best basketball in its history and has its best conference record since moving to Division I, ten years ago. This race is too close to call at this time, but if DSU continues to shoot 78 percent from the field, very few teams will be able to stop their run for the regular season conference championship.

The Hornets will be at Norfolk State on February 16, and this game should be a barn burner with unstoppable power guard Tony Murphy (16.9 ppg, 2.8 rpg, 1.8 stl) shooting the lights out and Roy Bright (18.7 ppg, 4.8 rpg) on fire with his long distance 3's.

At stake for the Hornets is a tie for second place behind Morgan State, who is playing on the road at Florida A&M on Saturday and Bethune Cookman on Monday. Neither team (FAMU or BCU) should be able to stop the 9-1 MSU Bears and their talented guards Jamar Smith (18.0 ppg, 5.5 rpg, 1.0 apg, 1.0 stl), Reggie Holmes (13.5 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 1.3 stl) forwards Marquise Kately (12.7 ppg, 6.0 rpg), and the MEAC leading rebounder, Boubacar Coly (9.5 ppg, 10.5 rpg, 2.6 blk, 1.0 stl).

Delaware State run may be too late with only six games remaining in the season with four at home before the MEAC Tournament.

Delaware State University Gives Canadian Student Major of Her Choice and Much More

Photo: Introducing Delaware State University Soccer player Savitre Bachoo, 5-6 playing the midfield position. The sophomore Nursing major is from Notre Dame Catholic School, Brampton, Ontario, Canada.

Savitre Bachoo chose Delaware State University and there is more than one reason why she did. “I viewed all the other schools that were also interested in me because of soccer and basically at Delaware State the atmosphere here on campus is awesome. Savitre is nineteen years old and in her second year at Delaware State.

She says for her, studying in the United States is a great learning experience. “I think it is not so much how important, but I think it is more of how great it is as a learning experience because in the United States as well as Canada too I can see that there is a lot more opportunities around you as long as you take advantage of it here, anywhere really, but with this is for me I think that there is a lot of things going on that you can always get yourself involved,” she says.

Going to college and playing soccer here is important for Savitre, but she says she also is mindful of having a job once she finishes. “Well, I am originally from Toronto, Canada and the reason why I decided to the United States was because I am on a soccer scholarship right now, but my whole goal in the future is I am a Nursing major and in terms of working in Canada as oppose to the United States, nurses make a lot more here,” she says.

Delaware State signs Maryland All-State quarterback recruit

Photo: Quarterback Nick Elko, the Capital-Gazette Newspapers' Player of the Year, committed to Delaware State University of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.

Elko attended a camp at Delaware State this past summer and caught the attention of the coaching staff. Assistant coach Ray Petty, who recruits the Anne Arundel County, Maryland area, kept tabs on Elko and formally offered a scholarship in October.

Elko will join 19 other recruits and 9 transfers that are already enrolled at Delaware State for the 2008 class. DSU Coach Al Lavan also signed Football Bowl Championship transfer quarterback Anthony Glaud (Sicklerville, NJ), who played at Bowling Green State University of the Mid-American Conference.

Elko should not have to play right away with starting quarterback Vashon Winton returning for his senior year. However, he will need time to learn the complex DSU offense, how to read more FCS defenses and adjust to the speed of the game, especially against programs at Hampton University, Florida A&M, South Carolina State, Bethune Cookman and Norfolk State that have some of the fastest defensive players in the conference.

Hopefully, Coach Lavan can develop Elko to be a solid 1-AA level quarterback in a highly competitive league. You never know how these young kids will grow when they step up in competition. Elko has a great foundation but will have to work extremely hard to become the type of championship player expected at DSU. But more importantly, he will be surrounded by the best talent we have seen recruited at Delaware State during the Lavan era.

Surging Morgan State Bears too much for Delaware State Hornets

Photo: Todd Bozeman, second-year head basketball coach has Morgan State University on top of MEAC standings.

BALTIMORE, MD -- The experts said it wouldn't take Todd Bozeman long to figure out the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. How does two seasons sound? Bozeman's Morgan State men's basketball team maintained its lead in the MEAC on Monday, beating three-time defending regular-season champion Delaware State 64-59 in a wild game at Hill Field House.

The Bears (13-8 overall, 8-1 MEAC) kept their unbeaten record at Hill (7-0) intact. "It was a grind-out win," Bozeman said. "It was a conference win; that's what's most important."

Thompson's bucket helps DSU women rally over Morgan State

Photo: Ashley Thompson pulled down 8 rebounds and scored 4 points in the Lady Hornets win over Morgan State. The 6-0 Sophomore forward is from Southern Maryland's McDonough HS, La Plata, MD.

BALTIMORE -- The first-half statistics for Delaware State's Ashley Thompson were less than stellar Monday night. Two shots from the field. One point. Ouch. Thompson's second-half numbers weren't spectacular, either, but she redeemed herself in the nick of time.

Playing for injured senior Katreem Palmer, Thompson scored the tying bucket with less than a minute to play to help the Hornets women's basketball team to a 52-49 victory over Morgan State in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference game at Hill Field House.

Morgan State Bears claw way to top of MEAC

Photo: MSU guard Jamar Smith #34 is leading the Bears in scoring averaging 18.2 ppg. The 6-2/210 senior is from Brooklyn Park, Minnesota and played at San Bernadino Valley College/Patrick Henry H.S.

BALTIMORE, MD - Morgan State’s men’s basketball team, just two years removed from a four-win season, has won five straight games to ascend to the top the Mid-Eastern Atlantic Conference. The Bears are off to their best start in 29 years and have a chance to qualify for a postseason tournament for the first time as Division I school, yet Coach Todd Bozeman is quick to put it all in perspective.

“I have no idea what you’re talking about,” he said. “We play Delaware State [today].” The Bears (12-8, 7-1 MEAC) cannot afford to look ahead. After all, opponents will not be looking past them. “When you have that bull’s eye on your back,” Bozeman said, “everybody’s gonna get up for you.”

Delaware State beats Coppin State, looks ahead to Morgan State

BALTIMORE -- Despite starting a new lineup on Saturday, it wasn't a change in chemistry that Delaware State needed. Instead, it was the same old thing -- the lack of defense -- that nearly cost the Hornets. While the revamped starting five showed it might yield positive results down the road, DSU learned it is defense it needs most after nearly surrendering a 19-point lead in the second half of a 56-48 men's basketball victory over Coppin State at the Coppin Center.

The Hornets' Mid-Eastern win gives DSU (8-11, 5-2) momentum for Monday's game at conference leader Morgan State (7-1 MEAC).

Delaware State expects Coppin State's best shot

Photo: DSU senior Roy Bright leads the MEAC in scoring with 18.9 ppg. The 6-6/225 all-star is from Durham, NC (Garden City CC), (Mt. Zion Christian Academy).

Hornets approach conference's last-place, first-place teams equally.

DOVER -- Who's more dangerous, last-place Coppin State or first-place Morgan State? For the Delaware State men's basketball team, that answer comes over the next three days with a game at each Baltimore school.

The Hornets begin the series today at 4 p.m. at Coppin State, which has a 4-18 record, 0-7 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. DSU plays Monday night at Morgan State (11-8, 6-1), off to its best start in 29 years. "I think we all have the mindset that we can't lose from here out," DSU junior forward Donald Johnson said. "We have to play both teams like they're No. 1 in our conference."
