UMES and DSU makes NCAA 2009 National Collegiate Bowling Championship Field

A Historic First: Two MEAC teams in NCAA Women Championship Bowling Field of Eight

INDIANAPOLIS - The eight-team field competing for the 2009 National Collegiate Women's Bowling Championship was announced today by the NCAA Women's Bowling Committee. The field includes the following teams, all selected at large:

Arkansas State University
University of Central Missouri
Delaware State University
Fairleigh Dickinson University
University of Maryland, Eastern Shore
University of Nebraska, Lincoln
New Jersey City University
Vanderbilt University

Competition begins with a qualifying round in which each team bowls four five-person regular team games and five four-game Baker matches. Total pinfall during the qualifying round determines each team's seed in bracket play. In the Baker format, each of the five team members, in order, bowls a complete frame until a complete (10-frame) game is bowled. The fifth Baker match serves as the position round. The pinfall from the position round serves as a tiebreaker, if necessary.

Based on the qualifying round, teams are placed in two four-team double-elimination brackets. Teams compete against each other in a best-of-seven games Baker match. Ties within a Baker game will be decided by another full Baker game. During bracket play, the higher seed receives starting lane preference for the first game of the match, the seventh game of the match and any tie-breaker game that must be played.

The Detroit Metro Sports Commission and the University of Detroit Mercy will host the championship, which will be held April 9-11 at Super Bowl Lanes in Canton, Michigan. Tickets can be purchased by calling 734/459-6070 prior to the championship.

The University of Maryland, Eastern Shore sport a 115-39 record, the second best in the country. The Lady Hawks defeated Arkansas State University, 4-2, to capture the 2008 NCAA National Collegiate Women's Bowling Championship at Thunder Alley in Omaha, Nebraska. The win marked Maryland-Eastern Shore's first women's bowling national championship and first NCAA national title in any sport in the institution's history. The victory also made Lady Hawks' head coach Sharon Brummell the first woman and first African-American to lead a team to the title since the NCAA established the championship in 2004.

This is DSU's first trip while UMES, Nebraska, Central Missouri and New Jersey City are all making their sixth trip. Delaware State is ranked 4th in the country and have earned a bid for the first time in the 10-year history of the team.

“This is such a thrill for the team and the university,” said Delaware State second-year head coach Kim Terrell-Kearney, who has led the Hornets to a 117-36 overall record this season. The Hornets are 25-18 this season versus the other tournament teams with wins over No. 1 Vanderbilt and No. 2 Nebraska.

UD-DSU Agree on Historic Four-Game Football Series

DOVER, Del.- Delaware State University and the University of Delaware announced Tuesday that they have reached a formal agreement that will result in the scheduling of four future football contests. In a joint announcement made by DSU acting President Claibourne D. Smith and UD President Patrick T. Harker at Delaware State's Administration Building, the two universities will play a series of games that will take place on Sept. 8, 2012, Sept. 7, 2013 and Sept. 6, 2014. All three games will be played at the University of Delaware's 22,000-seat Delaware Stadium.

The series will kickoff this fall when the two schools will play a scheduled game on Sept. 19, 2009 at Delaware Stadium. The game time and ticket information will be released later this spring. The 2009 game came about when Furman announced earlier this month that it was dropping out of a scheduled Sept. 19 game at Delaware earlier this month in order to schedule a game at the University of Missouri on that date. In addition to Smith and Harker, also taking part in the announcement were Delaware Gov. Jack Markell, Delaware head coach K.C. Keeler, and DSU head coach Al Lavan.

The DSU Hornets and the UD Blue Hens played for a historic first time in 2007 when both teams earned bids to play in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Series. The first round game, won by the Blue Hens by a 44-7 score, drew a Delaware Stadium playoff record crowd of 19,765, was broadcast live nationally on ESPN, and generated extensive local and national media attention.

18 recruits bolster DSU on offense and defense

DOVER, DE -- Delaware State University football coach Al Lavan unveiled a list of 18 newcomers who he hopes will put the Hornets back in the mix for the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference title in 2009. The Hornets announced Wednesday that they have signed 13 high school seniors to National Letters of Intent and added three junior college transfers and two Division I transfers to their roster. Lavan seemed pleased with the early returns of his class, which is represented by nine different states, including four players from Virginia.

"This is the strongest class both academically and athletically that we've had," said Lavan. "This is the first year that we have had significant improvement in the quality of recruits entering this program. "We are excited about the ability to stabilize some areas on offense, defense and special teams. The mid-years [students already enrolled at DSU] will come in and add to our team. In the long run, a class like this will help strengthen many of our positions."

The Division I transfers, quarterback Chris Johnson from Boston College and running back Tahree McQueen from Cincinnati, have the promise to fight for starting jobs immediately. Both players redshirted during the 2007 season and did not play in 2008. Johnson (6-foot-2, 215 pounds) and McQueen (5-10, 200) are enrolled at Delaware State.

Delaware State at Michigan football game set for '09

DSU Coach Al Lavan takes a giant step in facing Michigan Wolverines at Ann Arbor in '09.

Oct. 17 contest gives Michigan a 12th game

ANN ARBOR, MI -- The Michigan football team finalized its 2009 schedule with the addition of Delaware State, a historically black college. Delaware State will fill the Oct. 17 slot in Michigan's 12-game regular season, a source within the athletic department confirmed. Delaware State is a member of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, and is a Football Championship Subdivision (FCS), formerly Division I-AA, team.

Delaware State's coach, Al Lavan, was an assistant coach at Eastern Michigan and also spent 18 seasons in the NFL as an assistant.

Lavan became coach at Delaware State in 2004. In 2007, the Hornets won 10 games and the MEAC championship, the school's first since 1991. Last season, Delaware State was 5-6. Delaware State will be the second FCS school Michigan has played in three years. Appalachian State stunned the Wolverines, 34-32, in the 2007 season opener.

Michigan's 12-game schedule now features nonconference games at Western Michigan in the Sept. 5 opener, Notre Dame, Eastern Michigan and Delaware State, all at Michigan Stadium.

The Hornets are making a helluva step-up from Kent State and Central Connecticut State, who beat, DSU 24-3 and 28-10 respectively, in '08. But how many opportunities will the Hornets get to play a $50 million BCS football program (MI 2005/06 football revenue) chock full of Rivals.com 4-5 star recruits--before 111,000 at the Big House? Michigan will pull in $5 million for this home game alone in ticket sales and that's after cutting a check for $400,000 to DSU.

You will have to make this game, as it will be one of the greatest experiences in MEAC history. The Hornets, with a student enrollment of 3,500, average less than 4,000 at their on campus Alumni Stadium that seats around 7,000 for football games.

Former pro has DSU rolling to the top

Delaware State's second year head bowing coach and touring professional Kim Terrell-Kearney is on the verge of building the Lady Hornets into a national bowling powerhouse. DSU is ranked No. 4 nationally ahead of defending NCAA champion Maryland-Eastern Shore, which slipped to No. 5 after placing first in the preseason poll.

DOVER, DE -- When one door slammed closed on Kim Terrell-Kearney, she quickly turned her attention to finding a new challenge. Terrell-Kearney, winner of 11 pro bowling tour titles, decided to try her hand at coaching. There she could instill in youngsters a passion for the game that she loves. The two-time U.S. Women's Open winner found out that she was pretty good at getting her lessons across and two years ago landed a job as the head coach of Delaware State University's women's bowling team. Ever since she arrived, the Hornets have soared to new heights.

Last season, she led the Hornets to a school-record 74 wins and a No. 11 ranking in the final National Tenpin Coaches Association regular-season poll. DSU also finished second in the 2008 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Championship, the best finish in team history. This year, Delaware State is ranked fourth in the nation -- an all-time high for the program -- as the Hornets travel to Laurel, Md., for the Bowie State Tournament today and Sunday.

Terrell-Kearney admits that becoming a bowling coach in Delaware was not exactly on her radar about five years ago. "I've been coaching really since [the Ladies Professional Bowling] tour folded, which has been about six years now," Terrell-Kearney said. "It's definitely different, but I like it very much. "I wanted to coach in college and there's only five full-time coaching jobs in college right now in the country. They [DSU] used to be part-time but now they made it a full-time position and I applied and there we were."

Terrell-Kearney definitely boasts a strong résumé.

DSU can't keep up with Notre Dame's Harangody

Photo Gallery: Delaware State 58, Notre Dame 88

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Luke Harangody had 20 points and eight rebounds and Ryan Ayers added 18 points, leading No. 12 Notre Dame to an 88-50 victory over Delaware State on Saturday night. Notre Dame dominated inside, outscoring the Hornets in the paint 32-10 with a 41-24 rebounding advantage. Delaware State tried to slow Notre Dame's high-scoring offense with its slow, deliberate offense, but had minimal success because the Hornets couldn't slow Harangody.

Harangody was 7-of-8 from the floor for 16 points in the first half to lead the Irish to a 39-21 halftime lead. The Irish used a 12-0 run to extend the lead to 29, then continued to pull away for most of the rest of the game. Kyle McAlarney added 14 points for the Irish (8-2). Kris Douse and Marcus Neal led Delaware State (2-13) with 11 points each.

Delaware State Preview vs. #12 Ranked Notre Dame

Final exams are over and the Notre Dame student body has gone home for the holidays, but the Irish basketball team still has a couple of tests before it can head home for Christmas. Notre Dame (7-2) entertains Delaware State (2-12) at 7 p.m. tonight at the Joyce Center. Tonight’s game against the Hornets will be followed by a home date on Monday evening with Savannah State before the Irish players leave campus for break.

Notre Dame is currently ranked 12th in the Associated Press Poll and 14th in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches’ Poll, but have a great chance to move up in both with a strong showing on Saturday. Delaware State, of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, has played an extremely difficult non-conference schedule and has suffered losses at Ohio State, Kentucky and Maryland along with Big East defeats to West Virginia, Connecticut and Rutgers. Notre Dame head coach Brey said that he respects what Delaware State is doing with its non-conference schedule and believes that it will help them down the road.

“I understand what they’re trying to do here in the non-conference,” said Brey. “That’s a grueling thing to do, they’ve done a pretty good job of that and the one thing they’ve got is really tough kids. I know that from talking to people in their league, they’ve got tough kids and probably going through this toughens them up.” The Hornets opened the season with a victory over Division II Wilmington and won its MEAC opener against Maryland-Eastern Shore on Dec. 4, but have lost every other game. Delaware State is 0-9 on the road this season.

Backup QB helps Hornets win finale

DSU Hornets ends disappointing season as Coach Al Lavan look towards next year.

Glaud rallies DSU in second half

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- If it's November and you play on a losing football team, many players want to see their team's season come to a merciful end. Do not, however, count Anthony Glaud among them. Delaware State's sophomore backup quarterback wanted to prove Saturday that he represents the Hornets' future. A Bowling Green transfer who played behind four-year starter Vashon Winton all year, Glaud was DSU's offensive catalyst in a 10-6 victory over Howard before 2,161 fans on a bitterly cold afternoon at Greene Stadium.

"This wasn't the last game for me," Glaud said.

With Winton, who was starting his final game, the Hornets had just 69 yards of total offense. Glaud came in and completed 9 of 18 passes for 86 yards and DSU's only touchdown, a 15-yard pass to Erick Jones in the third quarter. Winton, who last week directed the Hornets to a come-from-behind win over Norfolk State, completed 7 of 12 passes for 49 yards. But with Winton not himself in his 44th career start, DSU coach Al Lavan made a change.

DSU bowlers off to hot start in MEAC

WASHINGTON -- The Delaware State University bowling team went 9-1 in the opening Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Northern Division competition of the season, tops among all teams. Delaware State was 5-0 in regular team play on Saturday, posting victories over Howard, Hampton, Morgan State, Coppin State and reigning NCAA and MEAC champ Maryland-Eastern Shore.

Sophomore Angela Reynolds recorded four 200-plus games, including a 243 against Coppin State. Junior Samantha Noviscky rolled 245 against Morgan State, and freshman Jazmyne Hefflefinger had a 226 against Howard. The Hornets were 4-1 in Baker competition on Sunday, with wins over Hampton, Howard, Coppin State and UMES before falling to Morgan State.

DSU's defense makes it look easy over NCAT

Photo Gallery: DSU 42, NCA&T 7

DOVER, DE -- None of them are easy. According to Delaware State linebacker Josh Pope, they just look easy. He was talking about turnovers, but he could have been talking about Delaware State's victory on Saturday, too. Pope contributed in forcing four turnovers to give the Hornets a 42-7 homecoming victory over North Carolina A&T before 6,089 bundled-up spectators on a chilly afternoon at Alumni Stadium.

Delaware State's defense generated one fumble and three interceptions. Pope's second-quarter forced fumble set up a touchdown as Delaware State earned its most lopsided victory of the season and second straight win in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.
"I don't think I'd say they were easy," Pope said. "These turnovers came on pure discipline. It was about being where you're supposed to be. There was so much energy over the game. It's about looking at reads and assignments. I think that's only gotten better for us."

Hampton holds on to beat Delaware State

Justin Brown hauls in the game-winning TD pass, then the Pirates thwart a late Hornets drive.

Photo Gallery: Hampton 17, DSU 14

DOVER, DE -- Behind one of the best individual efforts of the year, Hampton improved its Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference record to 3-0 by defeating Delaware State 17-14 Saturday. Hampton wide receiver Justin Brown made the biggest play of the game with a touchdown on fourth down with 3:30 left in the game. After making the reception, he managed to bull his way from the 10-yard line into the end zone against several Hornets defenders for 30-yard game-winning touchdown.

"From the beginning of the game, we knew we were going to be able to exploit their secondary by just watching film," said Brown, who had 106 yards on seven receptions. "We didn't play our best game, but we came out here and got a win, so that's all that matters." After the touchdown, the Pirates (4-1, 3-0) went for a two-point conversion to increase the lead to three. They lined up in Statue-of-Liberty formation.

Costello explains departure from DSU

DSU A.D. Rick Costello is leaving for Rutgers.

DOVER, DE -- Rick Costello said his decision to leave Delaware State came down to location and opportunity. The DSU athletic director accepted a position this week as Rutgers' deputy athletic director for finance and administration, almost identical to the role he played at the University of South Florida from 2004-2007 when he was associate athletic director and chief financial officer.

Though South Florida and Rutgers are both in the Big East, Costello sees the move as a step up. His wife is from New Jersey and being near New York City was too much to ignore, he said. "Those factors weighed heavily," Costello said Friday. "I think I just got presented with a great opportunity at Rutgers. I'm excited to go to a BCS program from the Big East. I'm glad they hired me." His new job starts Nov. 1. He's said he told DSU he will stay on until then and was assured he would be paid through that time.

Pirates prepare for important road trip

Hampton kicks off a tough three-game stretch Saturday with a trip to defending Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference champion Delaware State. That's followed by an Oct. 18 home game against rival Norfolk State and an Oct. 25 trip to South Carolina State, but it's first things first for Pirates coach Jerry Holmes.

"To get an opportunity to play the supposedly best team in the conference — it shouldn't take too much motivation this week to get the guys ready," said Holmes, whose team beat North Carolina A&T on Sept. 20 to improve to 3-1 and 2-0 in the MEAC before last week's open date.

MEAC Notebook: Special-teams scoring helps boost Hampton

■ Hampton opened its MEAC season by rallying for a 38-27 win over Howard last week. The Pirates scored all of their points in the second half, and Kevin Teel returned kickoffs 87 and 90 yards for touchdowns. "Special teams are a key part of a football game, and if you want to win, they have to perform well," Coach Jerry Holmes of Hampton said.

■ Winston-Salem State has struggled with its kicking game, but it isn't alone. Hampton, Norfolk State and Delaware State are the only MEAC teams that have kicked field goals this season. WSSU had a chance to tie Savannah State with 23 seconds left Saturday, but Adnan Kljajic missed a 27-yard attempt when it banged off the left upright. In two games, Kljajic is 0 for 3 on field-goal attempts and 1 for 2 on point-after attempts.

Hampton is 3 of 4 on field-goal attempts, Norfolk State is 4 of 7, and Delaware State is 1 of 5. Florida A&M and S.C. State have yet to attempt a field goal.

DSU looking for upside in 24-3 loss to Kent State

KENT, Ohio -- Delaware State entertained thoughts of revenge Saturday in returning to the scene of its only regular-season loss of 2007. A second chance to play a Division I-A program like Kent State offered the Hornets another opportunity to test and improve themselves heading into conference play. Even after watching his team's sloppy 24-3 loss Saturday afternoon at Dix Stadium, Delaware State coach Al Lavan was convinced his players would benefit from another visit to Kent.

"They did last year," Lavan said. "What we have to take from coming in to play this level of football [against] this number of good players is this -- we have to be significantly better the next time we play. And I think we will be for having played this type of team and experiencing the adversity we experienced. Now, we have to overcome it and go play at a higher level."

Last year, the Flashes earned a 38-7 victory, handing the Hornets their only regular season setback against 10 victories.

In last year’s match-up, Eugene Jarvis rushed for 136 yards and a touchdown, while also catching a 42-yard TD pass as part of a 267-yard passing day for quarterback Julian Edelman. Shawn Bayes started the scoring with a 42-yard touchdown grab before closing out the game with a 95-yard kickoff return with 22 seconds remaining.

SATURDAY'S SCHEDULE IS PACKED

Beginning when doors open on Tailgate Alley at 11:30 a.m. right up until the end of the game, the Heroes’ Day activities surrounding Kent State’s home opener Saturday against Delaware State will have fans excited, entertained and most importantly, educated.

The day will begin at Tailgate Alley with interactive displays and demonstrations from the four branches of the armed forces and local fire, police and rescue squads. In addition, the Flight 93 exhibit and timeline that spent all week at the M.A.C. Center will also be set up.

Prior to the game, the Army Fast Track Jump team will deliver the game ball and the Air Force will conduct a fly-over following a national anthem performance that will be highlighted by the unveiling of a 47’ x 90’ American flag on the field. In addition, family members of the Flight 93 passengers and crew, members of the U.S. Army and a Wounded Warrior representative will be on hand for the coin toss involving a special Flight 93 commemorative coin.

Offensive line big part of DSU's title quest

It was a direct order, the kind not to be questioned. It came from the guy at the top, after all. If he knew what was good for him, Adrian Brown, all 330 pounds of him, had better listen closely. "[Head coach Al] Lavan said, 'No fat guys allowed,' " the offensive lineman recalled of the first week he arrived at DSU from Hudson Valley College in 2007. " 'You all got to be slim and trim.'

"It was no joke. I found out the offensive linemen probably run more than anyone on the team." Brown and the rest of the offensive linemen have heeded Lavan's warning, and that could lead to the Hornets successfully defending their title as champions of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. "When you look back at where we've come from, this is the best [line] that we've had since I've been here," said Lavan, whose Hornets (1-0) visit Division I-A Kent State (0-2) from the Mid-American Conference on Saturday in Kent, Ohio.
