Delaware State braces for FAMU

Tallahassee, Florida - Delaware State's new head coach, Kermit Blount, sees two things in the way FAMU rallied last weekend that he could use to motivate his football players who are coming off two humiliating defeats.

First, the way the Rattlers came back in the fourth quarter to earn a five-point win gives him a power point to show his players there is hope to the end of every game. Secondly, he's been telling them that they can expect more of the same from the Rattlers. DSU comes to Bragg Stadium today for a MEAC matchup with the Rattlers.

"We have to learn how to play through all of the adversity," said Blount, who was hired after this past recruiting period to turn around the DSU program. He was out of coaching for a year after being fired at Winston-Salem State University.

Coaching the Hornets (2-2, 0-1), gives him an opportunity to resume doing ...

NSU report: South Carolina State offense may be problematic

Norfolk, VA - Norfolk State has seen this offense before, just not quite like this. South Carolina runs a spread offense predicated on a single play and single player, much like the offenses run by Charleston Southern and Howard - teams the Spartans have shut down this season.

The zone read quarterback run, recently brought to prominence by Tim Tebow and then Cam Newton, will be a big part of the Bulldog offense. South Carolina State quarterback Derrick Wiley might not be as effective as the aforementioned, he is better than both quarterbacks the Spartans previously faced.

"They're almost identical as far as scheme is concerned...," head coach Pete Adrian said. "They have a lot better players, which presents a problem."

Savannah State University looking for second MEAC win

Savannah, GA - Savannah State’s football team doesn’t want to slow down the wave of enthusiasm rushing over the school these days.

The Tigers are looking to make it two wins in a row, in the process showing students and alumni a good time in newly renovated T.A. Wright Stadium, when visiting Howard University comes to town tonight at 7.

“It’s so exciting to break our home in with the community,” said Tigers senior quarterback A.J. DeFilippis. “You know, it wasn’t a day I expected to come. But it’s come and we’re embracing it.”

MEAC upholds replay reversal in Hampton vs. Bethune-Cookman

NORFOLK, VA -- The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Commissioner Dennis Thomas has issued a statement regarding the final play of the Bethune-Cookman University vs. Hampton University football game played on Thursday, September 22, 2011 in Daytona Beach, Fla. The game was televised live on ESPNU.

"In addition to reviewing the video with the MEAC's Coordinator of Football Officials Rosie Amato, I felt the need to procure external analysis of the play in question and requested three seasoned and nationally respected officials including Rogers Redding, CFO National Coordinator of Football Officials and NCAA Football Rules Committee Secretary-Rules Editor, Doug Rhoads, Coordinator of Football Officials for the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), and Dr. Gerald Austin, Coordinator of Football Officials of Conference USA, to independently review the play in question. Upon their review it was concluded unanimously that the ruling to reverse the on field call to an incomplete catch was accurate therefore invalidating the final Hampton touchdown.

The analysis of the video evidence concluded that the airborne receiver did not maintain control of the ball after hitting the ground, and by rule did not fulfill all the elements of the process of completing the catch. The rule support for this reversal is Approved Ruling 7-3-6-XII and 7-3-6-XIII found on page FI-35 of the 2011-12 NCAA Football Rules and Interpretations manual."

SSU notches 1st MEAC win, beating N.C. Central, 33-30

Durham, NC - Savannah State could take a liking to its Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference football surroundings. Playing in their first official game in their new conference, the Tigers scored the first two touchdowns of the second half and held on to beat North Carolina Central, 33-30, as the newest members of the MEAC met in their conference debuts Saturday night at O’Kelly-Riddick Stadium.

“They’ll be able to tell their families they won the first MEAC Savannah State game,” said first-year coach Steve Davenport, who collected his first head coaching victory. “We kind of focused on this game long ago.”

The Tigers (1-3) were potentially in trouble until Byron Leggett — who converted to cornerback during the week — returned an interception 50 yards for a touchdown with 45 seconds left to establish a 33-22 advantage. That was followed by Geovonie Irvine’s 81-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to close the gap, and the Eagles tacked on a two-point conversion.

Spartans Improve to 3-1 with 33-3 Rout of Charleston Southern

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Chris Walley completed 20 of 23 passes for 285 yards and a pair of touchdowns, and the Spartans outgained host Charleston Southern 519-141 en route to a 33-3 non-conference win on Saturday afternoon at Buccaneer Field.

The win helped the Spartans improve to 3-1 overall, their best start since 2007. They did it in dominating fashion, rolling up a season-high 519 yards in total offense while their defense allowed a season-low 141 in their third straight win over a Big South opponent.

Running back Takeem Hedgeman ran for a career-high 105 yards on 15 carries, and receivers Victor Hairston and Xavier Boyce both topped the 100-yard receiving mark and caught a touchdown pass for NSU.

The defense got 12 tackles from linebacker Corwin Hammond and a season-high four sacks from four different players. Marcus Center accounted for the only turnover of the game with a fourth-quarter interception, the first of his career.

The Spartans jumped on the Buccaneers (0-4) early, outscoring them 17-0 in the first quarter. NSU took the opening kickoff and drove 85 yards in 12 plays, with Walley finding Boyce on a 13-yard TD pass for a 7-0 lead. After a three-and-out by CSU, the Spartans needed just one play to score their next TD. Walley hit Hairston across the middle. Hairston broke one tackle, made another man miss and sprinted 67 yards for his team-leading third touchdown of the season, giving NSU a 14-0 lead.

B-CU wins after refs nullify last-second Hampton TD

DAYTONA BEACH, Florida -- Hampton players swarmed the field and jumped on their hero. They didn't bother to listen to the referee announce that David Legree's touchdown pass with no time left would be reviewed.

But after several minutes the replay officials decided that receiver Isiah Thomas did not maintain possession as he fell to the ground on the apparent 12-yard TD pass, and Bethune-Cookman came away with a 35-31 victory in a bizarre Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference game Thursday night at Municipal Stadium.

Backup quarterback Jackie Wilson threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to Eddie Poole with 2:50 left in the game for the final margin of victory.

Legree, who passed for 225 yards and a touchdown and ran for two touchdowns, appeared to lead the Pirates (2-2, 1-1 MEAC) to victory with no time left.

But it was B-CU (2-1, 1-1) that got the final chance to celebrate in the back-and-forth contest that started nearly an hour late because of lightning in the area.

HU's new offensive coordinator opens up Pirates' offense

HAMPTON (2-1, 1-0 MEAC) at BETHUNE-COOKMAN (1-1, 0-1)
WHEN: 7:30 p.m.
WHERE: Municipal Stadium, Daytona Beach, Fla.
TELEVISION: ESPNU (7:30 P.M.)
INTERNET: ESPN3

HAMPTON, VA — Donovan Rose first met Willie Snead at a Fellowship of Christian Athletes meeting in Michigan in September 2010. Rose, Hampton University's head football coach, was in the audience as Snead, fresh off a 2009 state semifinal appearance at Muskegon Heights (Mich.) High, delivered a speech.

Neither man knew it at the time, but that speech also was a job audition.

After Rose's Pirates went 6-5 in 2010, averaging just 17.5 points per game, Rose found himself in the market for an offensive coordinator. One of the names that surfaced was that of Snead, a native of Belle Glade, Fla., who had made an impression on Rose.

"He had a way with people," Rose said. "(He's) a guy that is not easily thrown off track. He's just a very kind of mellow, consistent guy about getting things done. His resume was very impressive."

Bethune-Cookman faces Hampton in key MEAC game

Time: 7:30 p.m ET
TV: ESPNU

DAYTONA BEACH, FL — Brian Jenkins' inaugural season at Bethune-Cookman was a year-long run to a potential undefeated season and the Wildcats' claiming a share of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference championship for the first time since 2002.

The 2011 season could all come down to Thursday night — just three weeks into the campaign – when Bethune-Cookman meets Hampton in a nationally-televised (ESPNU, 7:30 p.m.) MEAC game at Municipal Stadium.

It's perhaps already a must-win for B-CU (1-1,0-1) if it wants to stay in the conference race. Hampton (2-1,1-0) has already beaten 2010 co-champion Florida A&M and doesn't have to face the South Carolina State team that beat B-CU 26-18 on Sept. 10.

DeFilippis still No. 1 QB at SSU

Savannah, GA - DeFilippis remains starting QB for Tigers. There’s no quarterback controversy at Savannah State. A.J. DeFilippis is still the starting quarterback, says Tigers coach Steve Davenport.

DeFilippis suffered a chest contusion after getting hit on a blitz in the second quarter during a 41-6 loss to Appalachian State last Saturday. Backup Antonio Bostick, who started seven games a year ago, played the rest of the way and scored the Tigers’ lone touchdown on a 10-yard run.

“We’re looking forward to having (DeFilippis) back this week,” Davenport said. “He’s the starting quarterback and I’m one who believes if the man wins the job in competition, it’s his job. I’m not necessarily going to change that.”

DeFilippis has started all three SSU games this ...

Blount looks forward to flying his Hornets in to visit Bulldogs

DOVER, Del. - Kermit Blount has two reasons to look forward to bringing Delaware State to Oliver C. Dawson Stadium this Saturday to face 25th-ranked South Carolina State.

The first one for the first-year Hornets' head coach is returning to familiar surroundings at a school where he previously served as an assistant coach under Willie Jeffries.

The second reason is the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference opener allows his team to quickly move forward from last Saturday's forgettable 45-0 rout at the hands of in-state rival and sixth-ranked Delaware.

"We shot ourselves in the foot so many times ...

Morgan State finally makes some big plays in 13-12 win over Robert Morris

Colonials miss extra point with 1:57 remaining to clinch Bears' victory

Baltimore, MD - Morgan State safety Reshaude Miller made a play that didn't score or set up any points. But it prevented points and helped turn around Saturday's game against Robert Morris.

Miller made a leaping one-handed interception that stopped the Colonials from taking a possible 10-point lead in the first half. That seemed to awaken the sluggish Bears, and they went on to make just enough well-timed big plays to escape with a 13-12 victory over Robert Morris at Hughes Stadium.

The victory ended a six-game losing streak for Morgan State (1-2), which dropped its final four games of last season.

The Bears were looking for something to give them a lift in this game, after opening the season with lopsided losses to Towson (42-3) and Bowling Green (58-13). Big plays were missing then, but they proved helpful on Saturday.

NCCU missed extra point costly in loss

DURHAM, NC -- On his weekly radio show Tuesday, N.C. Central coach Henry Frazier III said Elon would be a barometer on where the Eagles stand as a full member of the NCAA's Div. I Football Championship Series.

Like the Eagles, the Phoenix reclassified from Division II to the FCS and have been quite successful at it. NCCU, Frazier said, is looking to get to that level. After Saturday night's 17-16 hard-fought loss, NCCU (1-2) showed that it's that not far down the totem pole despite being outplayed on the statistics sheet. A missed extra point in the second quarter proved to be the difference on the scoreboard.

"We gave our absolute best, but mistakes hurt us down the stretch," a drained Frazier said. "We had the chance to win and we'll get better. But No. 3 is the real deal."

That No. 3 is Elon junior wide receiver Aaron Mellette, who caught 16 passes for a career-high ...

DSU ready to dream big against UD on Saturday

Dover, DE - Kermit Blount knows what it's like to have the proverbial rug pulled out from under him. The new coach at Delaware State University was the coach at Division II Winston-Salem State two years ago as the school was nearing the end of a five-year plan to make the transition from Division II to Division I-AA, or the Football Championship Subdivision.

Everything seemed in place, and the team was eagerly anticipating the move into the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. It already had increased the scholarships from 38 under Division II rules to 55. It was playing a full FCS schedule.

Then, just before that season started, the school called an audible and announced that it was going back to Division II. Blount and the players were devastated. The Rams went 1-10 that season, and Blount was asked to resign when it was over.

"It certainly hurt the players, and I found that I became more of a father figure than a coach because they relied on me to help guide them," Blount said.

Pough turns his attention to offense as SCSU prepares for IU Hoosiers

Orangeburg, SC - Buddy Pough was more than relieved Monday to arrive for his weekly press conference still undefeated in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play.

Just two days after an emotional 26-18 victory over Bethune-Cookman, the South Carolina State head football coach still marveled over how his team pulled it out in Daytona Beach despite continued difficulties on offense.

"It feels like that we dodged a gigantic bullet that way in the fact that Bethune was really, really good and after having seen them, I thought they were better than I thought they were when I saw them on TV," he said. "The difference was that we were fortunate in some of the things that we have that we created some stuff that I didn't realize that we could even create ourselves. Our defense can run and strike you and make a lot of plays and the fact we were able to keep them off-guard that way made the difference."

FAMU's Taylor looking to make some changes

Tallahassee, FL - Coach Joe Taylor saw enough on the film of FAMU loss in its first conference game that he might "try something different" with the offense, while this week's practice will focus on the basics.

At the same time, the Rattlers will have to finish the season without linebacker Alvis Graham, who suffered a knee injury in the 23-17 loss to Hampton University on Thursday night. Graham was hurt in the first quarter of the game that snapped a seven-game win streak for the Rattlers.

Javen Harris, a transfer from Central Florida who was recently cleared to join the team, would practice in Graham's spot as FAMU prepares to face South Florida on Saturday, Taylor said. They'll be going into the game with a 1-1 record, the same mark they had at this point last season before finishing strong enough to win a share of the MEAC title.

The loss to Hampton also was the first setback in five starts for redshirt sophomore ...

S.C. State defense redeems itself with victory over B-CU

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Safety Dominique Ellis was willing to take the heat.

As a senior leader in the S.C. State secondary, Ellis took full responsibility for last week's 21-6 loss to Central Michigan. In the contest, the 23rd-ranked Bulldogs gave up two critical long touchdown passes in the first half.

"The defense - we lost that game for us," he said. "I'll say it. Everybody will say it's on everybody. But we gave up two deep balls. If you think about it. If we change those two plays, we're in the game in the fourth."

Facing a 24th-ranked Bethune-Cookman team which put up 63 points and 500 total yards of offense a week earlier, Ellis and the defense were determined to redeem themselves. With two of the Bulldogs' four interceptions, including a game-clinching 55-yard tourchdown pick in the 26-18 victory, Ellis seemingly more than made amends.
