Baltimore proving to be Bears’ den - Morgan State eyes Mid Eastern Athletic Conference

BALTIMORE - Morgan State coach Donald Hill-Eley doesn’t have to continually remind his players of their goal of winning a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference title any more — they do it for him. “Before you had to sell them on the fact that they didn’t want to be part of a losing tradition and they just wanted to be competitive,” Hill-Eley said. “I hear them talking about championships, but I see them doing extra laps, I see them putting in extra time in the weight room.”

The Bears, coming off of consecutive 5-6 seasons, have their sights set on a MEAC title and automatic berth in the 16-team Football Championship Subdivision playoffs. Morgan State’s six losses last season, were by an average of 6.5 points, with none by more than eight.

Offensively, the Bears must replace Chad Simpson, the conference’s Offensive Player of the Year last season. The leading candidate to fill the void left by Simpson, who signed with the Indianapolis Colts as an undrafted free agent, is redshirt sophomore Devan James, who rushed 418 yards and two touchdowns on 85 carries last season.

Black schools winning more Fulbright awards

Parents who want to send a child to a black college know they have to look south, but if they prefer one that will also offer a good opportunity for international exposure, the right school may not be as far away as they might think.

The black college that has produced the most students who win a Fulbright fellowship, the prestige program of international exchanges, is not Howard, or Hampton University in Virginia, or Morehouse College or Spelman College in Atlanta, or any other private school.

The top producer is Morgan State University, a state school in Baltimore. Since the Fulbright program began in 1946, 120 Morgan students have won awards to conduct research or teach English in 30 different countries from Jamaica to New Zealand.

Freire Charter's Denard will attend Morgan State

Jarrod "G" Denard is one of those brassy basketball players who never shows a hint of hesitation. That was why his college situation was driving him batty.

Owing to some earlier academic struggles, Denard, a 6-1/183 senior guard at Freire Charter and first team Philadelphia Daily News All-City honoree, was unsure where he'd be heading. But now the answer is in: right down I-95. Denard yesterday committed to Morgan State University, in Baltimore, and he's planning to sit out next season even if he qualifies for freshman eligibility.

Morgan football takes hit

The NCAA yesterday penalized 123 colleges and universities, including Morgan State, for having athletic teams that fell short of academic guidelines.

Morgan State was punished with the loss of 1.68 scholarships in football and two scholarships in women's volleyball. Anticipating the result, the school said it had already cut back its number of football scholarships last fall from 63 to 60. "That gives you a sense of how serious and how diligent the athletic department is," university spokesman Jarrett Carter said.

Morgan State's APR was 902 in football and 860 in women's volleyball. UMES men's basketball scored 818 but was not penalized because of academic improvements and other considerations, the NCAA said. Coppin State's men's basketball and baseball teams scored below 925 but weren't penalized because the teams' performances eclipse that of the general student body, according to Coppin and the NCAA.

Morgan State's Coly decides to go pro

Boubacar Coly, Morgan State's 6-foot-9 defensive enforcer, will forgo his last year of NCAA eligibility to pursue a pro basketball career, Bears coach Todd Bozeman said this week. Coly, who played this season as a 24-year-old graduate student, leaves as reigning Defensive Player of the Year in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. He led the MEAC in rebounds (10.9 per game) and blocked shots (84).

A native of Senegal, Coly transferred from Xavier University, where he played in only a handful of games while undergoing two knee surgeries. He earned a degree in mass communication there, and that enabled him to play his first season at Morgan in 2006-07.

BALTIMORE, Md. - The 2008 Morgan State Bears prepare for another challenging schedule under 7th year head coach Donald Hill-Eley. The Bears’ season will include 7 road games and 5 games at Hughes Stadium. (Some game times have yet to be announced.)

Morgan State will open the 2008 season on the road and finish the year off with two games at home. The Bears will start the season by playing against two of their three non-conference foes of 2008. "We are excited about the challenge of 12 consecutive games in a row, said Hill, " and the opportunity to play a BCS Bowl Championship team (Rutgers)."

BALTIMORE, Md. - Morgan State University head football coach Donald Hill-Eley is leading his team through the last few days of Spring practice in preparation for Friday's annual Blue & Orange scrimmage. The game will be played at Hughes Stadium.

“The purpose of the scrimmage is to help our young men gain an understanding of our schemes,” said Hill. “It will also enable the coaching staff to evaluate the depth of our team.”

The scrimmage will pit the offense versus the defense with a scoring system in place to determine the outcome.

The annual Blue & Orange scrimmage will kick-off Friday, April 18th at 6 p.m. at Hughes Stadium. Admission is free.

SC State Falls to Top-Seeded Morgan State Bears 77-68

RALEIGH, NC – South Carolina State’s first season under Tim Carter came to an end Wednesday at the RBC Center where the 7th-seeded Bulldogs fell 77-68 to top-seeded Morgan State in quarterfinal action of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Tournament.

Guard Jessie Burton had a game-high 22 points and center Jason Johnson added 17 and a game-high 10 rebounds in the loss for SC State which completed the season at 13-20. Julius Carter came off the bench for 10 points and eight boards for the Bulldogs.

Morgan State, which is having its best season in 14 years, improved to 21-9 and advanced to Friday’s semifinals. Marquise Kately and Reggie Holmes each had 19 points to lead the Bears while Jamar Smith added 15 in the victory. MEAC Defensive Player of Year Boubacar Coly contributed nine points and nine boards each for the Bears.

Morgan State Bears Earn Three Top Honors at MEAC Tip-Off Banquet in Raleigh

RALEIGH, N.C. – The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) announced its 2008 all-conference teams Monday evening at the Tip-Off Banquet held at the North Hilton Raleigh Hotel. Morgan State’s Jamar Smith earned the 2008 MEAC Player of the Year award, as voted by the league’s head coaches and sports information directors. Todd Bozeman, also of Morgan State, was named the MEAC Coach of the Year, as voted on by his peers and Boubacar Coly was named as the 2008 MEAC Defensive Player of the Year.

Todd Bozeman guided the Morgan State Bears to their best regular season finish with a 14-2 conference record and a 20-9 overall mark. In only his second year at the helm, Bozeman’s Bears earned the school’s first regular season championship and will enter tournament play as the number one seed.

Coly recorded an unprecedented nine Defensive Player of the Week honors this season, including six in a row. He led the MEAC in blocked shots and rebounds, both of which he ranked nationally. He also led the MEAC in double-doubles with six and has grabbed 10 or more rebounds in 17 games. As a senior, he finished the season averaging 9.6 points and 11.1 rebounds a game. He has also amassed 76 blocked shots.

Smith, the third best scorer in the MEAC, led his team in scoring all season averaging 17 points a game. A senior, he has also posted 10 double-digit scoring performances, three double-doubles and three games with 10 or more rebounds. He has started in 27 games this season, averaging over 30 minutes in each, and has tallied 35 assists, 17 blocked shots and 29 steals.

WASHINGTON, DC - College lacrosse was at the center of a significant storm in the early 1970's, a riveting story that is coming into full view for the first time on television with The Morgan Lacrosse Story, a new documentary film for PBS. An accounting of the first and only college lacrosse team at a prestigious and historically black institution, Baltimore's Morgan State University.

When a young white administrator reluctantly accepted the position of head lacrosse coach at Baltimore’s Morgan State University, a six-year journey culminating in a shocking upset began. The Bears’ solidarity and determination to succeed changed the sport of lacrosse forever, even as they played in a racially charged period in our nation’s history — the early 1970s.

An emotionally-charged film that deals with issues of race and class during the Civil Rights Era, The Morgan Lacrosse Story uses the official team sport of Maryland as a vehicle to tackle complicated issues, and to honor the legacy of a groundbreaking team who would eventually pull off one of the greatest upsets in intercollegiate sports history.

By introducing viewers to the courageous individuals who made this important part of history and allowing them to tell their stories directly, this highly dynamic one hour documentary film connects the audience to the real emotions of their experience.

The Morgan Lacrosse Story was produced and directed by Luke David, a Producer/Editor at TEAM Sound & Vision. David felt a responsibility to make the documentary after being deeply inspired by the book Ten Bears, co-written by Chip Silverman, the team's coach, and Miles Harrison Jr. "It's rare to get the chance to work on something that you want to be a part of, a legacy worth preserving," David says. "Once I became aware of this story, there was no way I was going to let it go, or leave it in someone else's hands.

"With the archival resources that Chip had available, we knew we had to get things moving right away while everything was still intact. The real hook came once I started meeting the players and I realized how compelling they were as individual characters, let alone the civil rights backdrop of what they accomplished."

Edited by David and TEAM Sound & Vision editor Ian Rummer, with audio mixing performed by TEAM Sound Designer/Mixer Scott Rhame, The Morgan Lacrosse Story is set in Baltimore, but the themes contained within quickly reveal themselves to be universal. The events of the team's formation and rise to prominence are re-told by the players themselves, and examined in historical context by thoughtful and informed narration by Wendell Pierce from HBO's "The Wire".

In addition, hundreds of photographs from the collections of Silverman and his players have been gathered for the film, as well as newspaper clippings from almost every game they played.

Through the prism of a sport infused with the spirituality of its Native American roots, The Morgan Lacrosse Story, made possible by the creative inspiration of TEAM Sound & Vision and the generous support of Constellation Energy, the parent company of Baltimore Gas & Electric shows how this determined group harnessed the power of the game to change the college landscape forever.

"This is a positive story," Luke David concludes. "So many stories about race relations have a sour ending or feel hopeless, but here there's a resolution and a spiritual element. Wi-Hi RB has good news for MSU Bears

SALISBURY, MD -- Wicomico senior running back David Brown signed a letter of intent Friday to play football at Morgan State University.

"I went and visited there," Brown said. "It seemed like a good college. They had everything I wanted academics-wise. They had my major. I want to study business."

Brown, who amassed 2,141 yards and 35 touchdowns on 167 carries this past season, turned down offers from the University of Delaware and Towson University to attend the school his mother, Phyllis, graduated from. "I wanted to stay close to home," Brown said. Brown will be joined at Morgan State by his brother, Carl, who will transfer from Catonsville Community College to play basketball for the Bears.

This is an awesome incoming freshman for Morgan State. Brown not only made himself into a talented running back but he broke the Maryland state record for touchdowns in a career with 43 overall touchdowns. The 6-0/195 back averaged 12.82 yards per carry last season, returned eight punts for 341 yards and six kickoffs for 373 yards--when teams actually kicked to him. His conference coaches elected Brown-- Bayside Offensive Player of the Year.

Its always great to see our kids turn down the Colonial Athletic Conference, i.e., University of Delaware and Towson University for the MEAC, Morgan State Bears. This kid had options, so its great to get a second generation Bear in the Morgan den, with talent and good grades.

Arizona Jumper Signs With Morgan State Women's Track

BALTIMORE, Md. - The Morgan State women’s track and field program is proud to announce that Micsha Carson, a senior at Chandler High School in Chandler, Arizona has signed a national letter of intent to attend Morgan State University for the 2008-2009 track season.

Carson, a multi-event athlete who can do all jumps, sprints, and hurdles, will come to Morgan next year to focus on the long and triple jumps. Carson is a member of the Chandler Wolves who have won back-to-back state team titles, and are favored to win a third this year. Carson contributed by scoring in the long jump, the triple jump, the hurdles, and the relays. Carson has personal best marks of 19-2 (long jump), 39-4(triple jump), and 14.20 (hurdles).

Carson was the No. 2 triple jumper in the state of Arizona and was on the top ten list in the long jump, 100 hurdles, and 300 hurdles. Carson’s Chandler Wolves will be vying for their third 5A division I team championship in a row this season.

Howard Comeback Falls Short In Loss To Morgan State

BALTIMORE, MD. - Howard University staged a furious second half rally but fell just short in a 64-59 loss to Morgan State University in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference men's basketball game at Hill Fieldhouse.

The Bison (5-22 overall, 2-10 in the MEAC) appeared all but done when the Bears took a seemingly insurmountable 59-34 lead at the 9:39 mark of the second half. Morgan State (17-9 overall, 11-2 in the MEAC) combined some stifling defense and a sizzling fast break to keep Howard on its heels.

The Bears, who are now alone in first place in the MEAC after Norfolk State's loss to Coppin State, got a team-high 17 from Marquise Kately, 12 from Jamar Smith and 10 from Reggie Holmes off the bench. Boubacar Coly, one of the top rebounders and shot blockers in the nation, grabbed 14 caroms and was credited with 4 blocks.

Three Baltimore teams could be tournament-bound

UMBC, Morgan State and Loyola in the hunt as season winds down

In a perfect storm of opportunity, chemistry and ambitious coaching, three NCAA, Division I college basketball teams from Baltimore have raised the roof on expectations this season. As the college basketball season careens down the stretch, it's worth noting that Baltimore rarely has one team in contention for an NCAA berth. This season, it could hit the trifecta. Who would've imagined that?

On the east side of town, coach Todd Bozeman's cultural revolution has lifted Morgan State from the dregs of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference to a first-place tie with Norfolk State. The chances of a historic first NCAA Division I berth are not lost on the Bears. What were the odds that Bozeman could elevate the program at Morgan State in just two years? The MEAC is among the lower ranked conferences in Division I, but the Bears are not the product of a weak conference. With Marquise Kately, Boubacar Coly and Jerrell Green, they have the look of a legitimate tournament team.

DAYTONA BEACH -- Florida A&M stopped Morgan State's eight-game winning streak Saturday. The Bears were not likely to go winless in Florida.

Morgan State proved to be too big, too quick and too deep in defeating Bethune-Cookman 63-52 Monday at the Ocean Center. "I think they're the best team in the league. They're very talented," said B-CU coach Clifford Reed. "They're definitely one of the best teams for us to match up against. They're big and athletic."

B-CU tried to keep the game as close as possible by consistently holding the ball to the end of the 35-second clock, but the Bears out-rebounded the Wildcats 31-21, shot 46.5 percent from the field and hit 20 of 26 free throws.

Adams, Morgan State Silence Lady Rattlers, 55-51

TALLAHASSEE, FL - Slow starts are nothing new for the Morgan State women’s basketball team, of course not to the liking of head coach Donald Beasley. Matter of fact – slow stats are what the Lady Bears seem to be accustomed to.

So the constant stoppage of play during the first half of Saturday afternoon’s Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference game at Florida A&M, due to a malfunction in the shot clock, played no effect on the Lady Bears getting into a flow.

Morgan State fell behind by as much as 13 point (21-8) in the first half, but bounced back by forcing turnovers with its defense and scoring easy transition baskets to gain a 55-51 MEAC victory over FAMU at Gaither Gymnasium.

Corin Adams finished with a team-high 18 points and Shalane Price added 11 points for the visiting Lady Bears, who dealt FAMU its third loss in its last four games.

With the victory, Morgan State (15-9, 7-4 MEAC) extended its winning streak to a season-tying four games and won just its fifth game over the Lady Rattlers in the series’ 36 meetings, while earning it second two-game winning steak over FAMU in the series.

Former Morgan State coach Mitchell joins 'Skins staff

ASHBURN, Va. - Stump Mitchell followed Jim Zorn to the Washington Redskins on Wednesday, joining the team as running backs coach.

Mitchell, the Seattle Seahawks running back coach since 1999, will also have the title of assistant head coach with the Redskins. He and Zorn worked together on the Seahawks staff from 2001 through last season. "He's been a running back in this league, and I know him very well," Zorn said. "And I know how he teaches. He's an excellent teacher."

Mitchell played nine NFL seasons in the 1980s (1981-89). He was head coach at Morgan State from 1996-98 before joining the Seahawks.

For those that do not know, Lyvonia Albert "Stump" Mitchell at 5'-9", 198 pounds was a product of The Citadel that was drafted in the 9th round (226th overall) in the 1981 NFL draft. Michell had a nine year NFL career making All-Pro one-time in 1984. The St. Marys, Georgia native still ranks as the Cardinals' all-time leader in combined yardage (11,988) and is second in rushing yardage (4,649).

Mitchell played his high school football at Camden County High (Class of '77), a 4A school in Kingsland, GA. But prior to that time he came under the tutelage of Pop Warner coaches Alvin Glover, Lemon Dawson and Ricky Anderson. Stump was the second leading rusher in the country in his senior season at The Citadel.

Mitchell is an excellent example of how you combine education with hard work, and there are no limitations on how far you can go to the top of your profession. But, Education must always be placed as FIRST priority!

For those that don't believe there is career advancement after a job as a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference head coach, read the following very slowly: Stump Mitchell is now ASSISTANT HEAD COACH/Running Backs, for the Washington Redskins, which is one of the most powerful and storied franchises in the NFL. This is a great accomplishment for a former MEAC/Morgan State University head football coach.

The only limitations are those that we set in our own minds.

Holmes' threes key Morgan State over S.C. State

Guard hits 7 to tie school record; Bears win 8th straight

Morgan State guard Reggie Holmes took an aggressive approach in trying to break a recent shooting slump. The sophomore began taking 300 shots on his own after practice the past several days while searching for his outside touch.

The work paid off last night. Holmes tied a school record by making seven three-point shots en route to a 25-point performance that helped Morgan State to an 81-55 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference win over South Carolina State before an announced 2,246 at Hill Field House.

Morgan State (15-8, 10-1) extended its winning streak to eight games and remained in first place in the MEAC.

BALTIMORE, Md. – Morgan State University head football coach Donald Hill-Eley announced the signing of 23 high school and D-I transfers Wednesday afternoon on National Signing Day.

The 23 signees included six (6) linebackers, four (4) defensive backs, three (3) defensive ends, three (3) offensive lineman, three (3) wide receivers, three (3) quarterbacks and one (1) punter. The Bears signed 18 from high school and five (5) D-I transfers.

BALTIMORE, MD - Morgan State’s men’s basketball team, just two years removed from a four-win season, has won five straight games to ascend to the top the Mid-Eastern Atlantic Conference. The Bears are off to their best start in 29 years and have a chance to qualify for a postseason tournament for the first time as Division I school, yet Coach Todd Bozeman is quick to put it all in perspective.

“I have no idea what you’re talking about,” he said. “We play Delaware State [today].” The Bears (12-8, 7-1 MEAC) cannot afford to look ahead. After all, opponents will not be looking past them. “When you have that bull’s eye on your back,” Bozeman said, “everybody’s gonna get up for you.”
