Oct. 22's ASU vs. Clark Atlanta football game moved to Valdosta

ALBANY, GA — Before a single snap has even been hiked on the Albany State football team’s 2011 season, it’s already turning into an instant classic — literally.

The Rams, who were already slated to play in three “Classics” this season when the schedule was released earlier this month, added another one this week when the road game against Clark Atlanta was curiously moved from Atlanta to Valdosta by the Panthers, who will call the game the South Georgia Heritage Classic.

“It was Clark’s home game, and it’s their call,” ASU Sports Information Director Edythe Bradley told The Herald on Friday shortly after the announcement was made. “We’ve been hearing that moving the game was something (Clark) had been looking to do, and I guess a sponsor must’ve approached them to make it happen. (Financially), it’s a good thing for our school.”

Money saved or not, head coach Mike White was not a fan of the move.

Stillman Tigers announces 2011 Football schedule

Tuscaloosa, AL- The Stillman Tigers have announced their 2011 football schedule. The Tigers' open the season at home and will finish the season at home. First year head coach Teddy Keaton will lead the Tigers in an eleven game schedule, six home games and five away. The scheduled season will feature one DI-AA, two CIAA schools, and seven SIAC conference games.

Stillman will open the season at home on Sept. 3rd when the Tigers face CIAA defending champions Shaw University. The Tigers will get on the road for a three-game stretch—making a short trip to Birmingham on Sept. 10th to play DI-AA Samford University. Stillman will then travel north to Frankfort, Ken., on Sept. 17th to face Kentucky State University, and then south for another short trip to Tuskegee, Ala., on Sept 24th to faced Tuskegee University.

The Tigers will return home for three games to face Lane College on Oct. 1st, Benedict College on Oct. 8th and Chowan University on Oct. 15th .The Tigers will then return to the road and travel to Fort Valley, Ga., on Oct. 22nd to play Fort Valley State University. The Tigers will return home for a Thursday night match-up against in-state rival Miles College on Oct. 27th. The following week, the Tigers will make their final regular season road trip to play Clark-Atlanta University in Atlanta, Ga., on Nov. 5th.

Fayetteville State to play Carson-Newman in Football on Sept. 8

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - For the first time since the 2004 NCAA Division-II playoffs, the Fayetteville State Broncos will play perennial powerhouse Carson-Newman in football in 2011.

And a win could mean a potential playoff berth for the Broncos.

Fayetteville State announced on Thursday it will travel to play the Eagles at 7 p.m. on Sept. 8 in Jefferson City, Tenn. The Broncos were originally slated to play St. Paul's on the road in the second week of the season, but St. Paul's College announced earlier this month that it would not field athletic teams next season.

The opportunity to play Carson-Newman gives Fayetteville State 10 football games for the 2011 season -- the number needed to qualify for a playoff berth.

"We are fortunate Carson-Newman had an opening on its schedule and we were able to make a game," says Broncos football coach Kenny Phillips. "It goes for our 10th game, and if we're fortunate enough to have a good season, we'd be eligible for the playoffs."

West Virginia State added to JCSU football schedule

Johnson C. Smith will open its 2011 football season against West Virginia State.

The Golden Bulls will open their season Sept. 3 against the Yellow Jackets at McGirt Field, according to a revamped schedule on JCSU's website. The change became necessary when original opponent St. Paul's eliminated its entire athletics program earlier this month. As a result, the Tigers have been removed from CIAA membership, leaving the league with 12 schools.

JCSU officials opened the search for a new opponent shortly after St. Paul's announced its intention. Golden Bulls coach Steve Aycock and athletics director Steve Joyner confirmed JCSU was in contact with multiple Division II schools and one Division I program about filling the open date in order to keep its preseason schedule intact.

JCSU football recruits for defense‎

Johnson C. Smith recruited for defense in the latest class of football signees. The Golden Bulls signed 10 defenders among its 19 recruits, including four linemen to shore up a unit that allowed an average of 39 points per game last season and were near the bottom of the CIAA in rushing yardage allowed.

Three linemen are transferring from community colleges: Stephan Diggs (Feather River), Leon Minto (Nassau) and end Rinso Molitika (Los Angeles Valley). Diggs is from Rockingham.

JCSU also signed four defensive backs in its search for a pair of new starters: Marcus Teamer, a 5-10, 180-pound strong safety from McDonough (Md.) High; Michael Stroup, a safety from Waynesville Tuscola High; cornerback Frantz Charles (N.C. Tech) and safety Lance Harris from L.A. Pierce (Calif.) College, who had 31 tackles during an 8-3 campaign.

Saint Paul's athletes search for new homes

Lawrenceville, VA - Saint Paul's College wide receiver Raymond Mack already was enduring a tough semester when his school decided to eliminate its athletics program. On Jan. 6, he returned from an unofficial football practice to find his house on fire. Mack lost his house and all his possessions inside. Firefighters would later blame the house's old wiring and a space heater.

As the semester wore on, things began looking up for the junior. The football team named a permanent coach and Mack prepared to become a leader on the field the next season. "We just got back on our feet, and everything was good," Mack said. "It was too good to be true."

Now Mack prepares to transfer, as do many other athletes at the school. He'll have to learn a new system, find a new home and settle in at his fourth college — Mack attended two junior colleges before enrolling at Saint Paul's. Former Cavalier working on gridiron and DEA career

Winston Salem, N.C. - At 6-foot-3 and 320 pounds, Justin Kee is built to enforce justice on a football field.

In his freshman year at Winston-Salem State, Kee did some of that, and he’ll likely do much more of it through the next three falls. More importantly, he’s already working toward the same mission in the classroom.

Kee, a 2009 Lakeland graduate, earned an All-CIAA (Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association) Scholar-Athlete award for the 2010-11 school year as he’s maintained a 3.0-plus GPA throughout the year. Kee, a defensive lineman for the Rams, is a Justice Studies major with the goal of becoming a Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) agent.

“That’s exactly what I’m aiming for. I like learning about the justice system a lot and I’ve started looking at the things I want to do if I go to work for the DEA,” Kee said.

JCSU football scrambles for Sept. 3 game

Golden Bulls look to replace St. Paul's College

Charlotte, N.C. - Wanted: One opponent for Johnson C. Smith’s Sept. 3 football season opener. Apply immediately.

The Golden Bulls are in negotiations with multiple schools to fill a hole opened by St. Paul’s decision earlier this month to shut down its athletics program. Neither JCSU Athletics Director Steve Joyner nor head coach Steve Aycock would identify the schools contacted, but suggested a deal could be struck by next week to remain on a 10-game schedule.

“Nothing is concrete yet,” Aycock said.  JCSU has contacted three non-CIAA schools about Sept. 3, including at least one Division I program, Joyner and Aycock said. The others are Division II teams. Schools in the South Atlantic, West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic and Southern Intercollegiate Athletic conferences are in immediate proximity to Smith.

WSSU's Corders waiting for chance at the NFL

Juan Corders of Winston-Salem State hasn't made an appearance in any of the endless mock drafts on the internet. But he still hopes for the chance to make an NFL roster.

Corders, a 6-foot-2, 250-pound defensive end from Durham, has spent the past several months working hard to get noticed. He graduated from WSSU in December with a double major in business management and marketing. He also played in two HBCU all-star games, and he plans to keep his cell phone close in the coming days.



"At one of the all-star games, there were some scouts showing interest," said Corders, an All-CIAA selection last season. "I've got nothing concrete, but I feel like something will come along after the draft, and I'll get a shot."

Corders participated in the NFL Pro Day at Wake Forest in March and did fairly well, bench-pressing 225 pounds 21 times and running the 40-yard dash in 4.88 seconds.

Saint Augustine's Falcons Release 2011 Football Schedule

Raleigh, N.C. - Five home games highlight the 2011 Saint Augustine's College football schedule which was released Tuesday.

The Falcons are looking to build off last season's 9-2 record and second-place finish in the CIAA's Southern Division. They capped the 2010 year by defeating Fort Valley State 20-9 to take home the Pioneer Bowl title. The nine victories set a modern school record for season wins.

Led by Head Coach Michael Costa, the Falcons host Catawba in the season opener on Sept. 3. They hit the road the next two weeks with games against New Haven on Sept. 10 and Saint Paul's on Sept. 17. The contest versus Saint Paul's kicks off the CIAA portion of the schedule.

The Falcons return home Sept. 24 to play Lincoln (Pa.) before hitting the road again to visit Fayetteville State on Oct. 1. They finish the second half of their schedule with three of the final five games at home starting with Winston-Salem State on Oct. 8. The Falcons step out of conference for the final time during the season for an Oct. 15 matchup against West Georgia.

The homecoming game will be Oct. 22 against Johnson C. Smith followed by an Oct. 29 home contest against Livingstone. The Falcons wrap up the regular season against crosstown nemesis Shaw on Nov. 5 at Durham County Stadium, which is the host site of the CIAA Championship Game on Nov. 12.

Virginia Union: NFL draft holds hope for ex-South Meck star

The NFL draft is a strange way to enter the workforce. Imagine watching ESPN Saturday and hearing that in the fifth round you've been selected by Presbyterian Hospital, Duke Energy or Charlotte Magazine. Don't you wish it were Sunday, and the draft had ended, and you knew what would come next?

"No," says David Mims. "I want to see how it plays out."

Mims, 23, was an All-Southwestern 4A offensive tackle at South Mecklenburg High and three times All-CIAA and twice Division II All-America at Virginia Union. He guesses he'll be selected Saturday in the fifth round of the NFL draft. His agent, Greg Linton, hopes for the fifth round.

Linton works for Hall of Fame Sports out of Canton, Ohio. Mims and his mother Regina and father Davvie and an uncle and an 80-year-old grandmother and few close relatives and friends will fly to Canton Friday morning.

VSU's Howard Spencer Greets Success With A Smile

ETTRICK, VA -- What makes Virginia State University junior Howard Spencer so easy to identify is not the free-flowing mane of dreadlocks that billows out of his football helmet. Nor is it the head-turning speed with which he roams the baselines.

It's his unfailing smile -- an ear-to-ear grin that rarely leaves his visage and has come to define the 21-year-old two-sport athlete. "Everybody always calls me 'Smiley,'" Spencer said. "They say I'm always smiling and they know something is wrong when I'm not."

To be fair, the 2007 Thomas Dale graduate has a lot to smile about. His work ethic and positive approach have become contagious and lifted him into leadership roles on the VSU football and baseball teams.

2011 NFL Draft: Colts Show Interest In AAMU DT Frank Kearse, BSU WR Derrick McPhearson

Colts Director of Pro Personnel Tom Telesco said yesterday at the team's pre-draft news conference that defensive line was one of the strongest areas, in terms of talent, in the 2011 NFL Draft. So, it should come as no surprise that Indianapolis has more than a passing interest in Alabama A&M defensive tackle Frank Kearse.

According to our buddies at National Football Post, the 6'4, 315 pound tackle is 'on the radar' for the Colts.

Just FYI: Alabama A&M produced Colts all-world defensive end Robert Mathis.  Indianapolis also conducted a private workout for Bowie State wide receiver Derrick McPhearson. McPhearson returned punts and kicks in college. He also played defensive back and even a little QB.

Shaw Bears: Out Of The Wreckage In Raleigh, A Hero Emerges

Raleigh, N.C. - Faced with an emergency, a lot of us run away. But some of us run towards. That's what LaMichael Howell did this week when a tornado tore up his college campus.

Howell, a three-year captain of the Shaw University football team in Raleigh, N.C., was planning dinner with friends in his off-campus apartment Monday afternoon when the power went out. Moments later, the lights came back on and the news came in: a tornado had blown through the area and done catastrophic damage.

Howell decided to drive to campus to see for himself. And he'll never forget what he encountered.

"The student union was a wreck," says the 23-year-old senior. "Power lines were down. I couldn't see. Every turn you made, you had to turn back around. Trees everywhere. Dumpsters turned upside down."

Shaw Assistant Coaches Suspended for Drug-Related Offenses

RALEIGH, N.C. -- A pair of Shaw University assistant football coaches have been suspended without pay following their arrests this month for drug-related offenses, the school announced Wednesday.

Court records indicate that the school's wide receivers coach Torey Renard Ross, 28, was jailed under a $100,000 bail after he was charged on April 7 with being a fugitive from justice. Records filed at the Wake County Clerk of Courts Office show that Ross is wanted in Hinds County in Mississippi, on charges on failing to appear in court in August after he was arrested for possession of marijuana.

Following up a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association championship season with a 5-5 record in 2010 wasn't a shock to Fayetteville State coach Kenny Phillips.

BRONCOS CAP SUCCESSFUL SEASON OF SPRING WORKOUTS

FAYETTEVILLE, NC - Before Larry McDonald is done with his football career, there's a good chance he will have started more games than any other player under Fayetteville State head coach Kenny Phillips.

He may hold the record for participation in the most practices, too. And that includes the ones during the spring.

McDonald, an All-CIAA offensive lineman who will play either guard or center during the 2011 football season, will begin that season penciled in to start from Day 1 for the fourth straight year when the Broncos host UNC Pembroke on Sept. 3 in the third Two Rivers Classic at Luther "Nick" Jeralds Stadium.

In a sense, though, the new season has already begun.

The Mebane, NC, native has already played in 32 games in his Fayetteville State career and was a key component on a line that helped the Broncos win the 2009 CIAA championship.

He has also visited the Ravens this month.

Mims bench pressed 225 pounds 29 times at his Pro Day workout, running the 40-yard dash in 5.32 seconds. He registered a 4.8 20-yard shuttle, an 8.1 on the three-cone drill, an 8-6 broad jump and a 27-inch vertical leap. Mims' workout numbers are superior or equal to many of the top tackle prospects.

The Division II All-American and All-CIAA selection is an imposing blocker who displays a mean streak. Although he played left tackle in college, Mims is regarded as a classic right tackle for the next level.

JCSU Bulls focus on future, not past of 2-8 season

No one talks about last year at Johnson C. Smith (University).

The Golden Bulls, who went 2-8 in 2010, wrapped up spring football drills Monday with an intrasquad scrimmage that resulted in an 18-18 tie. The focus is on building an attitude that produces success in 2011.

"The one thing we don't put into our family circle of trust is the poison of last year," coach Steve Aycock said. "We talk about things going forward, keeping our shoulders high and our eyes straight forward."

Smith returns a veteran core but must replace its top offensive players, three-time All-CIAA receiver Jeremy Franklin and quarterback Ryan Carter. Defensively, the Golden Bulls have to shore up a unit that allowed 39 points per game.

Livingstone Spring Football Goes Airborne

SALISBURY, N.C. — Anthony Holland is jumping at the bit to rid Livingstone of its lingering pain from its 0-11 season in 2010.

The sense of urgency was transparent on the first play of 7-on-7 drills on Saturday at Livingstone’s black and blue spring football game. Holland, a sophomore receiver, snatched a rocket over the middle from the brisk, cool air and proceeded to the end zone 35 yards ahead.

It wasn’t the dawn of a new era at Alumni Stadium, but Livingstone can hope it was a sign of things to come. “The Blue Bears are going to change,” was Holland’s declaration after the game. “It ain’t no more 0-10, 0-11. We’re going to change the program. You’ll see that first game.”

2011 NFL Draft Prospect Profile: David Mims, OT, Virginia Union

Every season there are a handful of small-school players who seemingly come out of nowhere, which is where they really are on the college football landscape, and make it into the NFL. Let's use today's 2011 NFL Draft prospect profile to look at one player who might fill that bill this time around.

David Mims is a massive (6-foot-8, 331 pounds) offensive tackle from Virginia Union. Wes Bunting of the National Football Post was sold on Mims after watching his Pro Day. He wrote:

At 6-8, 331-pounds he’s definitely more of a right-sided player at the next level who is going to need some proper time to develop. However, physically and athletically the guy certainly possesses an NFL caliber skill set. He carries his weight well, has a thick base, long arms and displays natural fluidity and change of direction skills through contact when engaged.

Mims also still has a ton of upside to his game and after his impressive pro day workout he definitely has scouts buzzing about his long term potential. I spoke with a scout this weekend who told me following his workout, "Unfortunately he’s not a sleeper anymore."

When I was going over small school tape this summer, I was instantly intrigued by the size of Virginia Union OL David Mims who at 6-8 and 350+ pounds was at the time one of the bigger prospects in the entire draft. Now, it was pretty obvious that he didn’t have a firm grasp on what he was doing from a technique standpoint.
