Wray, Ford advance again on day 2 of NAIA nationals

GULF SHORES, Ala. — Xavier University of Louisiana freshmen Shalysa Wray and Ariel Ford secured more berths in the finals during the second day of the NAIA National Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
     

Wray qualified for her third final of the meet when she placed fifth in the 100-meter dash preliminaries in 11.77 seconds Friday. The top eight advanced to final at 3:50 p.m. Saturday.
     

Xavier University of Louisiana women's track and fieldWray was the only freshman to reach the 100 final. Her time is the fastest by an NAIA freshman in the national preliminaries since Mount Mercy's Bri'Anna Branch ran 11.70 in 2016.
     
Ford qualified in her second event with a season-best time of 56.09 seconds in the 400. Ford ranked seventh among the nine who advanced to the final at 5:30 p.m.
     

Wray and Ford will compete for XULA's 400 relay team in a 2:40 p.m. final. Wray will run in the 200 final at 5:10 p.m.
     

In the final women's event of day two, XULA qualified for the 1,600 relay final with the fourth best time of the prelims and a school-record 3:48.75. Wray, Ky'Reon McBrideAlexis Williams and Ford are the relay members.
     

Edward Angel tied for 23rd in the men's high jump at 1.97 meters/6 feet, 5 1/2 inches. Angel, an All-American a year ago in this event, was eliminated after missing all three of his attempts at 2.02 meters/6-7 1/2.
     

Also competing Saturday will be Brandon Matthews in the men's triple jump at 1:30 p.m.

     100 preliminaries:  Shalysa Wray, 5th in 11.77; Alexis Milton, 27th in 13.30
     400 preliminaries:  Ariel Ford, 7th in 56.09

Men
     High Jump:  Edward Angel, tied for 23rd in 1.97 meters (6 feet, 5 1/2 inches)

Jones, Pace are Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes

Xavier University of Louisiana women's track and fieldNEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana's Janelle Jones and Brianna Pacewere named Friday as Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes in women's outdoor track and field for 2018-19.
     

Both Jones and Pace received bachelor's degrees May 11 from XULA. Jones was an accounting major from Baton Rouge, La., and a graduate of Episcopal High School. Pace was a computer science major from Junction City, Kan., and a graduate of Junction City High School.
     

To qualify for Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete, student-athletes are nominated by their institution, must maintain a minimum grade-point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale and must have achieved junior academic status.
     

Pace also won this honor twice in cross country.
     

Jones is an alternate on the 400-meter relay team that will compete in the NAIA national final at 2:40 p.m. Saturday in Gulf Shores, Ala. Pace was All-Gulf Coast Athletic Conference four times in track and three times in cross country.
