Bowie State men, women earn CIAA victories

BOWIE,Maryland - The Bowie State University men’s and women’s basketball teams opened Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association play with lopsided victories against visiting Fayetteville State University on Thursday evening in front of nearly 800 spectators at the A.C. Jordan Arena in Bowie.

After falling behind briefly late in the first half, the Bowie State men’s team took command with two decisive runs en rout to a 97-85 victory. The women’s team earned its first victory of the season, 69-49.

In the men’s game, Fayetteville’s Tyrrel Tate connected on a 3-pointer to give the visitors a 40-36 lead with 2 minutes, 40 seconds remaining before the intermission. But the Bulldogs (9-1 overall, 1-0 in the CIAA) responded with a 9-2 run that ended when Seat Pleasant resident Jay Gavin nailed a 3-pointer just before the buzzer to send the Bulldogs into the locker room with a 45-42 lead.
