WINSTON-SALEM, North Carolina -- In the end, coach Bobby Collins coaxed about all he could out of his Winston-Salem State men's basketball team.Not expected to do much coming into the season, the Rams overachieved. They won at least 20 games for the second straight season, finishing 21-9. They won the CIAA tournament title. And they made a return trip to the NCAA Division II tournament.
Their season ended Saturday night in West Liberty, W.Va., with a three-point loss to West Virginia Wesleyan in the first round of the Atlantic Regional. After losing six seniors from last season's team, then losing starter Lamar Monger after 11 games to a torn ACL, Collins still had the Rams one defensive stop away from extending their season on Saturday.
"We had won so many close games, so I thought we would get it done again," Collins said. "But I'm proud of my guys for all the adversity we faced and the fact that we did win the CIAA title."
