ST. CROIX -- South Carolina State University sophomore runner Seymour Walter boosted his chances of qualifying for the 2012 Summer Olympics after he broke a U.S. Virgin Island National record June 2 at the Music City Distance Carnival held at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn.The St. Croix, Virgin Island native ran a blazing time of 1:49.19 in the 800 meter event, snapping the record held by former S.C. State runner Terry Charles, also a native of the Virgin Islands. Charles had set his record back in 2008 with a time of 1:49.50.
Walter hopes to run in the world Olympics, but will have to continue his success in another event he’s scheduled to run early this summer. He will race in the 2012 North American, Central American and Caribbean Athletic Association Under-23 Championships, held in Mexico in July.
