Grimsley hires former A&T player Griffis as boys basketball coach

GREENSBORO, North Carolina - Grimsley has hired former N.C. A&T basketball player Thomas Griffis as its boys basketball coach. He replaces longtime Whirlies coach Darren Corbett, who accepted an assistant coaching position on the men’s basketball staff at A&T, where his father formerly served as head coach.

Griffis, a graduate of Raleigh Athens Drive, walked on to the A&T men’s basketball team before earning a scholarship his sophomore year. He played for Corbett’s father, Don Corbett, and helped lead the Aggies to four consecutive NCAA tournament appearances and MEAC championships from 1985-88. Don Corbett, who racked up a 254-145 overall record in 14 seasons with the Aggies, left the program in 1993.

Griffis is scheduled to be inducted into the A&T Sports Hall of Fame in September.
