Bowie State earns dramatic OT victory

BOWIE, Maryland - For the second time in three games this season, the Bowie State University football team experienced high drama.

Saturday afternoon, the Bulldogs used a furious fourth-quarter rally to force overtime, where they earned a 24-17 victory against visiting Fairmont State (W.Va.). After falling behind 17-0 with 11 minutes, 46 seconds left to play, the Bulldogs came back to tie the score.

Tyrae Reid tossed a 12-yard touchdown pass to Corwin Acker with 10:43 left. Mario Diaz-Aviles hit a 24-yard field goal with 6:06 to go. Reid then connected with Douglas McNeil on a 31-yard touchdown pass with 2:15 left, and the extra point by Diaz-Aviles tied the score at 17-17.

In overtime, where teams alternate possessions starting 25 yards from the end zone, Bowie State picked up a first down at the 15-yard line and scored on a 12-yard touchdown pass from Reid to Acker on a third and 7 from the 12.

Needing a touchdown and extra point to force a second overtime period, Fairmont State advanced to the Bowie State 11-yard line, but tossed an incomplete pass on fourth down, ending the game.
