West Virginia State 34, Johnson C. Smith 31

INSTITUTE, West Virginia - West Virginia State opened the 2012 campaign with a 34-31 victory over visiting Johnson C. Smith Saturday afternoon.

The Yellow Jackets scored 21 in the first quarter, grabbing a 14-point advantage at the end of one.

LeFloyd Phillips completed a nine-play, 70-yard drive to open the scoring. The visitors answered with 2:12 left in the first stanza. With just 61 seconds left in the first quarter, Ervin Kent hauled in a pass from Ricky Phillips for a 73-yard score for the Yellow Jackets. Then, Deraughn Brown scored on a pass from Phillips just 16 seconds later for a 21-7 lead with 55 seconds to play in the first.

JCSU reeled off 16 straight points, taking a 23-21 lead with 12:23 to go in the third quarter. However, head coach Earl Monroe’s team answered with 13 straight points to secure the victory.

Aubura Taylor scampered for a nine-yard touchdown run with 2:31 to play in the third. He then scored on a three-yard run with 8:24 to go in the contest.
