Florida A&M Holmes goes big on locals

TALLAHASSEE, Florida  --  Earl Holmes didn’t just go heavy on local football players when he was recruiting the first class to begin his era as head coach at FAMU this fall.

He went big, and the size of players in the 2013 class is already getting attention if the comment that came from a fan in the back of the room is any indication.

“I thank you for not getting a lot of midgets,” a fan told Holmes during his signing day press conference, causing laughter from the crowd in the conference room at the Lawson Center on Wednesday afternoon.

Most of the players who boast height and weight will compete for playing time on the offensive and defensive lines. The notable defenders range in height from 6-foot-2 to 6-foot-6 and their weights from 250 to 295 pounds. The three offensive linemen signed weigh 275, 310 and 340 pounds and their heights range from 6-foot-3 to 6-foot-6.
