Winston-Salem State Releases 2013 Football Schedule

WINSTON-SALEM, NC The Winston-Salem State University Department of Athletics is pleased to announce the 2013 football schedule.

Coming off the most successful football season in HBCU history with a 14-1 record, Winston-Salem State University will once again battle through a challenging schedule with a solid mix of good, out of conference competition and as usual, a tough CIAA slate to contend with.

Winston-Salem State finished the 2012 season as the NCAA DII National Runner Up, and HBCU National Champions for the second consecutive year. WSSU has won 25 games with just two losses over the past two seasons and have not dropped a conference game over the same time period.

The WSSU Rams will open the 2013 season on the road on a Thursday night, as they will travel to Pembroke, NC to face the Braves of UNC Pembroke on September 5th. The Rams have won three straight against the Braves, including a 28-23 win at Bowman Gray Stadium in 2012. WSSU holds a 3-0 series advantage over UNC Pembroke.

The following week, September 14th, the WSSU Rams will open their home season, welcoming a new opponent to Bowman Gray Stadium in the Dragons of Virginia University of Lynchburg. This will be the first ever meeting between the two schools. This game has been designated as the Hall of Fame Game.

Winston-Salem State will travel back to Cleveland, Ohio in the third week of the season to participate in the Cleveland Classic at Cleveland Browns Stadium. This year the Rams will face the Golden Tigers of Tuskegee University on September 21st. This will be the fourth meeting between WSSU and Tuskegee, with the Golden Tigers leading the series 3-1.

The Rams will wrap up the September portion of the schedule on the road in Richmond, VA, to take on the Panthers of Virginia Union University. The Rams hold a slight 21-20-1 advantage in the series between the two schools. WSSU won 35-6 last season in a game played at Bowman Gray Stadium in Winston-Salem, and have won four straight games in the series.

As the leaves begin to turn to their fall colors, and the air begins to crisp, and the month of October rolls around, the WSSU Rams will return home to take on CIAA foe, Bowie State University. WSSU leads the series with the Bulldogs, 13-5, including a 35-3 win in Bowie, MD in 2012.

The following week, WSSU will welcome alumni from all around the globe, as Homecoming 2013 takes center stage, when the Rams welcome the Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith University to Bowman Gray Stadium. WSSU leads the series with JCSU 40-21-4 and have won 12 straight games in the series. In 2012, WSSU took a 63-7 victory over the Golden Bulls in a game played at Memorial Stadium in Charlotte.

Winston-Salem State will hit the road for the final two games of the month, starting with a road trip to Raleigh, NC to take on the Falcons of St. Augustine's University. It will mark the first time the Rams will have played the Falcons on campus in new Saint Augustine's University Stadium. WSSU defeated the Falcons 56-37 in 2012, and holds a 13-11-2 series record over St. Augustine's University. The Rams have won two consecutive games in this series.

WSSU will wrap up the month of October with a trip down I-85 to Salisbury, NC to take on the Blue Bears of Livingstone College. The Rams hold a 36-11-1 series record over the Blue Bears, including having won 10 consecutive in the series. WSSU defeated Livingstone College 58-0 this past season.

The Rams will close out the regular season with back to back home games. First, on November 2nd WSSU will play host to the Bears of Shaw University on 1000 HORN$ Appreciation Day. Winston-Salem State defeated Shaw 62-31 in 2012, and holds a 10-7-2 series lead. WSSU has won two straight in the series.

The Rams will wrap up the 2013 regular season hosting the Broncos of Fayetteville State University on Senior Day. WSSU leads the series 46-13-3, including this past season's 41-8 romp in Fayetteville. The Rams have won four straight in the series.
