Murphy’s touchdown gives B-CU win over TSU

NASHVILLE, Tennessee  --  Kicker Jamin Godfrey had already scored all of Tennessee State’s points in the game. With one second left on the clock, the Tigers needed Godfrey to boot one more field goal to send the game to overtime.

But the senior’s kick was wide right on a 49-yard attempt and Bethune-Cookman hung on for a 12-9 victory in a defensive battle Sunday night in the John Merritt Classic at LP Field in Nashville, Tenn.

“I’m proud of this football team and this coaching staff,’’ B-CU coach Brian Jenkins said. “To fight a juggernaut like Tennessee State and come out with a victory is tremendous for us.’’

Tight end Jordan Murphy caught a 6-yard touchdown pass from Jackie Wilson with 5:01 left to put the Wildcats up 12-9. It was the only touchdown of the game. Antonio Harper blocked B-CU’s extra-point attempt.

Freshman quarterback Ronald Butler kept TSU’s final drive alive with a 25-yard pass to Lavatiae Kelly to the B-CU 35 on third and 24. The Wildcats thought Butler fumbled on the next play, but he was ruled down with about five seconds left.
