ORANGEBURG, South Carolina -- When the Buddy Pough era finally ends at South Carolina State, even the most diehard critics would begrudgingly give him well-deserved kudos. From bringing the Bulldogs’ program into the 21st century, to introducing a more Football Bowl Subdivision-approach to the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, to achieving 11 straight winning seasons, four conference titles and three Football Championship Subdivision appearances, Pough has enjoyed a successful tenure.
There’s just one factor that keeps Pough from claiming the “Top Dog” coaching mantle and it can be summed up in three words – one play away. Saturday’s 27-20 loss to number 21/25 Coastal Carolina was another instance when finishing a play or more cost the Bulldogs an opportunity to claim that elusive victory over a nationally ranked FCS opponent.
The missed PAT in 2002 and unsuccessful game-tying, two-point conversion attempt in 2004 against Wofford.
