Basketball: Spartans resume practice with heads high

NORFOLK, Virginia  -- There was no shortage of lessons to be learned by Norfolk State from Monday’s 66-56 loss at Virginia:

Sloppiness won’t fly against an elite opponent; it really helps when shots fall; playing with top scorers in foul trouble is unwise; and developing a reliable half-court offense would be a good idea.

But the biggest takeaway could be that things aren’t as bad as they might have seemed.

The jet-setting Spartans (8-5) return to the practice court Thursday to prepare for the end of a trying — but wholly interesting — four-game road swing. After a brief holiday break, they’ll practice again Friday and leave Saturday for Monday’s game at Hawaii, which follows an 86-82 overtime win at Boston University, a 70-67 loss at Seattle University and Monday’s brief foray into the Atlantic Coast Conference — all in a span of 15 days.
