South Alabama aide emerges as NCCU coach candidate

DURHAM, North Carolina  -- Hampton intercepted one of the football coaching candidates N.C. Central has been targeting, picking off former Winston-Salem State coach Connell Maynor, and that has better positioned South Alabama wide receivers coach Jerry Mack to become NCCU’s next football coach.

South Alabama is a Division I team in the Sun Belt Conference. Mack was still on staff at the school late Tuesday, but he has interviewed for the NCCU job, South Alabama assistant athletics director for media relations Brian Fremund confirmed.

NCCU’s Board of Trustees has scheduled a special meeting for Thursday, and one of the agenda items calls for discussion about a coaching candidate for the school’s football team.
