WSSU opens CIAA play with a 91-84 victory over Virginia Union

WINSTON-SALEM, North Carolina  -- Grinding it out in the CIAA is sometimes the only way to get a victory.

That’s exactly what Winston-Salem State did Thursday night in a 91-84 win over Virginia Union at the cavernous Gaines Center. With the students on break just over 500 were on hand to watch the Rams go to the free-throw line 40 times and play just enough solid defense.
 
“We definitely had to grind this out,” Coach Bobby Collins of the Rams said. “There are no easy nights in this conference. Virginia Union just beat Virginia State and they were at the top of that division.... I was happy we did what we needed to do but we’ve got a lot of work to do.”
