WSSU's Owens enjoyed time at all-star game

WINSTON-SALEM, North Carolina -- Winston-Salem State’s Donnie Owens won’t show up in anybody’s mock NFL Draft or on a list of draft prospects to watch.

But Owens, a 6-3, 295-pound defensive lineman, was excited at how he played last weekend at the NFL Players Association Collegiate Bowl in Carson, Calif. His goal was to get noticed by the NFL scouts who were there most of the week watching practices.

Owens started on the line for Team American and had two tackles and a sack that forced a fumble.

“That was the highlight of my week, obviously,” Owens said. “My mom (Yolanda Gerald) had a little party to watch the game, and I guess she couldn’t believe it when I got the sack.”
