SU women fall out of first place in SWAC

MONTGOMERY, Alabama — The Southern women’s basketball team has fallen out of first place in the Southwestern Athletic Conference for the first time this season.

It happened after a game in which the Jaguars scored the first 11 points of the game and the first nine of the second half, but still lost to Alabama State 73-63 on Monday night at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome.

The loss dropped Southern, which plays at Alcorn State on Saturday, to 16-7 and 13-2 in the SWAC. Texas Southern beat Arkansas-Pine Bluff 67-64 to pass Southern and move into first place at 13-1.

The Jaguars won their first eight conference games and handed Texas Southern its only conference loss on Jan. 6, but TSU has been unbeaten since and Southern has been erratic.
